[ NOTE: Please confine the newsgroup discussion to how this proposal might
benefit the nanotechnology community, industry and the general public,
as the moderators have ruled that the newsgroup is not an appropriate forum
for discussing the specifics of the funding proposal or the business plan.
Discussion of the specifics of funding or the business plan should be
carried out via private e-mail to the poster. Thanks in advance for
your cooperation! -- /gdp ]

My company has purchased a large number of generic nanotechnology
domain names (e.g., nanomagnetism.com). These names cover the entire
nanotechnology discipline, and establish a keyword Internet structure.
High quality development of these web sites would result in
significant benefits to the technical community, industry and the
general public.

Details on this concept, including potential applications, are
provided at:
http://www.naknow.com/nicfaq.html
A scenario for corporate funding is also discussed.

I would very much appreciate comments and suggestions for employing
these domain names in the public interest.
Thank you.

I won't waste too many words here -- I don't see how this would be
helpful at all. To anyone. The "aims" of this proposal are already
done well by existing reputable entities. If I want to find out about
nano developments in general, I go someplace like foresight; if I am
interested in specifics, I visit the appropriate scientific journal.
I go to the source. For academics, this is pointless (I have never
once mindlessly visited thermodynamics.com or statisticalmechanics.org
hoping for a quick fix of knowledge). For the general public,
probably moreso -- what do you envision drawing people to these sites?
I doubt that sites dealing with other exciting emerging technologies,
such as fuel cells or even romanticized space technologies, have much
traffic from the general public. There's a slight chance that a site
like this could be marginally effective as a networking tool for
people involved in the area.

I'm sorry if I come off as harsh -- I'm sure you mean well. But this
is really no different than cyber-squatting; and this choice of topic
for domain names is probably just ineffective cyber-squatting. I hope
you don't have too much time or money invested in this venture...
