Okay. I will give you this scenario, and I want you to analyze it.

When I post in sci.physics or sci.physics.particle or
sci.physics.relativity I always post stuff that is half nonsense, and
reveal my lack of a complete education in these things. Other people
there criticize me. And I have been been known to assert things that
are not true. These groups are completely unmoderated, so I can post
this crap however much I want.

However, when I post to sci.physics.research while I do sometimes post
things that are illogical, those tend to be moderated out. However, I
also post a lot of considerable posts that do get through, and those
posts are fairly intelligent and well written. I do ask mostly
questions, but when I know the answer, and I TRULY do know it, I give
it, and things go fine.

It reveals that, like most children, you'll get yourself into trouble
unless you are supervised.

So it's kind of like the Hawthorne effect.

A more interesting question is, why do so many psychotic weirdos post to
usenet while remaining practically invisible in the street? Of course,
the answer is that they are effectively anonymous here. So maybe they
are not psychotic at all, as long as they confine their weirdness to the
newsgroup.
