"America's proud heritage as a land where the standard of living rises
like late-summer corn seems, to many, to be at risk."

People got used to this "fact". This "fact", however, was the result
of hard, productive work. They forgot to remain highly educated and,
as a consequence, highly productive. Now, they are reaping the rewards
of lower pay. No surprises here.
