Q: recommend book about electrolytic solutions

All,

I would appreciate recommendations for a book covering electrolytic
solutions, preferably from a science (biochemistry, biophysics)
viewpoint rather than engineering. Advanced is ok, but the simpler the
better. I'm interested in studying the physics involved with macroions
(i.e. proteins) in solution and especially membrane-bound proteins like
cotransporters and channels.

I would like the following sorts of topics covered in reasonable detail:

Nernst equation (electrodiffusion)
Membrane potential
Electrostatic double layer
Hamaker coefficient
DLVO theory

Any assistance would be appreciated- thanks in advance!

There are many textbooks on electrochemistry that cover these topics. Check the card catalog at your library. Or locate an[/quote:2a44995bcf]
electrochemist in the Chemistry Department of the School of Science, and ask for a recommendation. You might even audit a course.

Check J.M Bockris & Reddy "Modern Electrochemistry- A multidisciplinary
appprach" Vol-I and II.

H.S.Harned and B.B.Owen, The Physical Chemistry of Electrolyte
Solutions, Reinhold, New York (1958). Never had a chance to read this
book but seems to be a classic of its time due to its size.

Andy,

CWRU has one of the finest group of electrochemists in the world at the
Ernest B. Yeager institute. They love to collaborate. Go and talk to
a few of the electrochemists over there.
