Below-zero temperatures greet area residents
Jack Frost nipped at a few noses in the Hub City area Thursday morning.
Aberdeen hit 9 below zero at 7:50 a.m. Thursday and also Wednesday morning,
according to Stan Keefe of the National Weather Service.
But that's nowhere near a record cold for this year - February saw several
days at 17 below zero, and January saw a couple of days at 18 below zero,
Keefe said. It's also short of the record low for Dec. 11 of 22 below zero,
which was set in 1927.
But whether Aberdonians have more ice-cold temperatures to look forward to
this winter remains to be seen.
Keefe said there has been less snow the last few winters because of El
Ninos. And there's a relationship between snow depth and temperatures - if
there are several inches of snow on the ground, it's very difficult to warm
up, he said.
So far this year there's no indication of an El Nino, which can allow for
extremes - be it precipitation or temperatures, Keefe said.
"This part of the country is really known for extremes," Keefe said. Yearly
precipitation can fluctuate drastically, as can temperatures.
But even if an El Nino was to develop like in years past, it doesn't mean
Aberdeen will be free from cold temperatures. "Even in a nice winter, it's
going to be winter in this part of the country," Keefe said.
For the short-term, the temperature in Aberdeen was expected to reach 5
below Thursday night, he said, with similar temperatures in the surrounding
area.
But a warm-up is forecast to begin today, with a high of 15 to 20 degrees.
Saturday's high is expected to be 25 to 30 degrees. Sunday should also be
around 30 degrees, Keefe said, with a lot of the same for most of next week.
Conditions are expected to be partly to mostly cloudy until Monday, when
snow is possible.

Wrong again George. I am not a Canadian Climatologist. If I were a
Canadian Proctologist I would recommend something regarding your mole and
suggest that under the superior Canadian health care system it would have
already have been taken care of at no charge to you, and at a cost that is
66% lower than the american system that still does not cover 50 million
Americans.
