Do you agree?

================

The 3G iPhone is coming. GPS manufacturers should be very, very
scared.

Are you saying if a new GPS implementation come along in the
marketplace, the others should be scared? It's called innovation
and moving the technology forward.

I'm purchasing an iPhone.... I want "live" weather radar maps with
me when traveling... and now I'll have an additional GPS receiver
with mapping... Now I just need to supply the energy!

This will be a good forum to share experiences with the GPS enabled
iPhone.

There's going to be an enormous amount of discussion going on about
this now, here's some more to add to it

Blackberry has had GPS support for quite a while (the 8800 had it, for
example). Just about any modern mobile can use BT-GPS.

And there's free software like Nav4All available to use the mobile as
Satnav...

The iPhone with GPS is nice, and we'll see some flashy applications for
it (probably even GPS games?), but it's not a revolution, and probably
still too expensive for the mass market (plus, I'd really prefer a
keyboard...)

No. Not at this time.  There was some info on GPS Passions how smartphone
GPS units just don't cut it in terms of sensitivity and reception compared
to even older hand held GPS units with a patch antenna.

There is not enough storage on the iPhone to store all the maps and
waypoints. I presume they could download maps as needed from the
Internet, but this could be somewhat slow on a 3G device. One postive
item is with the Internet the maps and points of interest (POI) could
always be current and even show the user the current traffic problems
as is already done on some GPS devices with FM receivers.

Not yet. The 3G iPhones will cost one $2,000-$3,000 over the two-year
contract required from AT&T in the US, so they're going to remain in
the smartphone niche (i.e. only a few percent of the mobile phone
market), at least for the moment.

No threat whatsoever to the market for $200-$400 dedicated auto
navigation products. Yet.

8 or 16GB is not enough?? That's about 1,000 times more than my first
mapping GPS had.

Why???
Maybe the article is confusing "GPS" with "navigation devices"...

Should be taken into account that if you buy a phone and a nav... you
spend may much less money than buying a phone with GPS-r integrated
(that has poor GPS performance...)
huh?...

My at&t Tilt has had a GPS in it for quite some time now. Let me know how
the MMC and video recording is working on that new iPod 3G phone. I'd say
Apple is playing catch-up.

Nav4All works like that, and runs fine on my K610... remember, in such
a case you don't download a whole map, but just a route...

I guess it can store the maps, but you then have reduced your storage
considerably for music and photos.

Nope. I have a 8830 Blackberry (with GPS & Google Maps, etc.) and a
nuvi - I can't really imagine taking my phone off my belt and clipping
it to the windshield so I can avoid having a dedicated GPS.

And just because Blackberries do email doesn't mean laptop
manufacturers are very, very scared.

It's a lotta hot air. Etcetera.

Of course. Store one thing, and you can't store the other.

The alternative would be to use online maps - but that would require
PERMANENT access to the network. Quite a challenge even in Germany.
Travelling through the US mid-west would probably be... interesting, I
guess ;-)

BTW, GoogleMaps for Mobiles supports finding the location based on the
cellphone towers (a bit like the first iPhones) - I tried that out on a
train trip in Germany yesterday, and Google thought I was at the North
Pole :-)

Actually, there is. If you look at the Garmin Nuvi it holds over 1 GB of
data including maps and POI.
