These kids are on to something - but they need to go further.
I think the consensus has already formed that flat mirrors are the way
to go - the increased manufacturing cost of parabolic mirrors probably
has a negative payoff. Indiviudal flat mirrors can be efficiently
aligned to approximate a larger parabolic reflector.
The next step is to think of solar reflectors that do not need energy
intesive materials such as glass. Thin metal foil simply attached to
wood might exceed the energy yield of metal-on- glass mirrors.
Aluminium metal will become as precious as gold given the energy input
required to make it - perhaps iron can be made into a reflecting foil
with the right technology. |
