I want to start raising chickens but haven't been able to find any
locally. Can you mail order chicks? Can they ship them safely and
humanely? I live in western Montana.

I've had good luck here:
http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/
Though this hasn't been a good year for getting chicks from them, I hear.
It's getting late in the year for shipping chicks. You may want to wait
till the fall.

Where did you find that on the Jeffers site? I drive by the poultry supply
page in Magee all the time. If they do sell chicks, I can't see their
shipping to Montana.

If you look up hatchery on google you will find lots of suggestions who can
help you find your chosen birds.
There are also plenty of site with guidance about caring for shipped chicks
and any potential problems to look for.

why would it be too late? We're still getting snow here. Is it heat
during shipment I should worry about?

Yes. I think it may be hot where they are. |

Decide what breed you want. In Montana, I would get Brahmas or Bard
Rocks. Something that can tolerate the climate.
You will have to supply heat in the cold months anyway. Montana is
ridiculously cold, why do you live there !!!
I like my Bramas. Google them and you will get a breeder eventually.
Try Back Yard Chicken,,,or something like that.
I don't remember where I got mine. Now would be a good time to order
Pullets . Is it warm in Montana yet? Didn't you just get 15 " of
snow? Im in Rhode Island. |

Plus, they only sell many of their breeds early in the year.

Brahmas aren't especially good layers, and the one that I have that went
broody incubated the chicks but systematically killed them as they hatched.
They're cute, but I don't see them as being useful compared to Rhode Island
Red or the Rocks. |

Got my last batch in the fall from Meyer. Had 35 and the only ones
not to make it were hawk snacks. The rest are happily laying away.
I chose them because they were fairly close to me and I knew that I
would basically get them overnight. I would suggest that you look
for one close to you, and they likely have birds best suited to your
climate.
