GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - Scientists listening to underwater
microphones have detected an unusual swarm of earthquakes off central
Oregon, something that often happens before a volcanic eruption -
except there are no volcanoes in the area.
Scientists don't know exactly what the earthquakes mean, but they
could be the result of molten rock rumbling away from the recognized
earthquake faults off Oregon, said Robert Dziak, a geophysicist for
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Oregon State
University.
There have been more than 600 quakes over the past 10 days in a basin
150 miles southwest of Newport. The biggest was magnitude 5.4, and two
others were more than magnitude 5.0, OSU reported.
On the hydrophones, the quakes sound like low thunder and are unlike
anything scientists have heard in 17 years of listening, Dziak said.
Some of the quakes have also been detected by earthquake instruments
on land.
The hydrophones are left over from a network the Navy used to listen
for submarines during the Cold War. They routinely detect passing
ships, earthquakes on the ocean bottom and whales calling to one
another.
Scientists hope to send out an OSU research ship to take water
samples, looking for evidence that sediment has been stirred up and
chemicals that would indicate magma is moving up through the Juan de
Fuca Plate, Dziak said.
The quakes have not followed the typical pattern of a major shock
followed by a series of diminishing aftershocks, and few have been
strong enough to be felt on shore.
The Earth's crust is made up of plates that rest on molten rock, which
are rubbing together. When the molten rock, or magma, erupts through
the crust, it creates volcanoes.
That can happen in the middle of a plate. When the plates lurch
against each other, they create earthquakes along the edges.
In this case, the Juan de Fuca Plate is a small piece of crust being
crushed between the Pacific Plate and North America, Dziak said.

Hop it doesnt turn out to be noisy fish again like
in Florida reported last week in NY Times.
Some people living on Florida canals were
sueing city for noisy sewage plant, but it turned out
to be fish noise. |

"No volcanoes in the area" means within... twenty miles? Fifty
miles? One hundred miles? I'm asking because I'm sure that in the
past I've read about volcanic activity not too far from the Triple
Junction area.

Yeah...if he has any memory. Perhaps the post was a test
to see if anyone remembers... to see if it's safe to come
back.
NO IT AIN'T!!!

Oooohhh...so many ways to interpret that. But the most important
part woudl be finding a picture of the poor fellow.

At 5:05 AM Pacific Daylight Time on April 12, an earthquake with
preliminary magnitude 5.6 occurred off the coast of Oregon.
The magnitude is such that a tsunami IS NOT EXPECTED. However, in
coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be
triggered by underwater landslides. This will be the only WCATWC
message issued for this event. The location and magnitude are based on
preliminary information. Further information will be issued by the
United States Geological Survey or the appropriate regional seismic
network.
Trying not feel uneasy (especially since my emergency supplies are
quite limited).
That series of quakes in the Andreanof Islands is interesting. I hope
you are not too concerned about things over there though.
There does seem to be a strange set up of meteorological conditions
over there. An extremely large High for instance north of Hawaii with
a periodicity that seems designed to send a lot of debris into the
Arctic -if it helps to feel the hand of god in these matters?
Coincidentally there is an high too, over the Appalachians. Perhaps if
you were to spend a bit more time on the subject, being able to sample
events locally would help you understand things. It might help. I
can't say.
You may wish to flee that hand. But where would you flee to? On a
religious note being ruled by a fool will get everyone -innocent and
guilty, both; into an hell of a lot of trouble.

In my opinion all the large ones were associated with a deep Low. But
they might just as likely be related to extensive Highs.
And of course, it has to be allowed that the losers on here know what
they are talking about. Not that they do by any means, of course. It's
not very likely and if this group were not so badly infested with
fools, I'd not even mention it.
But they will insist that I am wrong.
Which pleases me immensely.
They might be able to hide from the wrath of god but they won't be
able to hide from me. |

Talk about IRONY!
Here I am watching the activity on the West Coast close to me, & it's
my parents who get shook up in Indiana (Epicenter in Illinois is less
than 100 miles from them!!!!)
If it wasn't for the 9 cracks in the sidewalk & driveway that also
dropped the cement about 1/4 inch when they trying to sell their house
in a soft market I'd almost be laughing.
I'm sorry to say that I foresee a lot more of this this year. The
first part at least.

Still happening, as they frequently do. Some people just
think they see a trend in random events.
