I will be switching to a computer that does not have the legacy
parallel port, only USB. Does anyone know if the USB to Parallel Port
cable will allow Zemax to work on this computer using the original
Zemax parallel port key?
I know I can exchange my key for a USB key but only if the support is
up to date. I am still trying to get my company to let loose the cash
for this.
It may be easier in the short term to get the adapter working. |

I tried it with two different USB to parallel adapters and failed.
It worked with a PCIe parallel port expansion card, whereas other parallel
port hardlocks refused to function there.

I also recently wasted money on an adaptor cable that didn't fool the zemax
dongle. Learn from my experience.

I wound up using a Quatech SPP-100 G PCMCIA adapter that worked well.
Other adapters, no.

Well, I'm sure I'm talking out of my asp on this, however... I have a par.
port dongle for my laser marking software, and the version that I have
was designed with Win95 in mind. I also had this problem when moving
up to a PC running XP, or Win2000, and I was told that in versions of
Win. after 95, the par. port functions are "virtualized" in software, so there
is no longer the hardwired printer port that the dongle's require for their
periodic checking of validity. So, by using a USB to par. adapter, you
get back the funcionaltiy of that type of port, but for a device that requires
the specific hardware and handshaking of the original design, it won't
work. In my case, there are new dongles available if I do the upgrade
to a XP version of the software, I'm just guessing but I imagine that it's
now a USB dongle... Please ignore all this if someone here has a
better/accurate description of the problem, this is just how it was desc.
to me in my situation. But I've seen this happen across a number of
different $$ software packages that relied on the par. port dongles,
so there must be some truth to it...

I have this exact situation as well only with a key for Oslo and asked
Lambda Research what to do. I have 2 options from them, buy a new key
(my subscription is not up to date), or get a PCMCIA parallel port. |
