A reusable energy source, never discussed...
Hundreds of nuclar bombs were exploded under ground at mercury Nevada in
the 50s, 60s, and 70s it will take several hundred yrs for the heat
generated from these bombs to dissipate.
Just like under ground thermal heat, this heat could be converted to
electrical power, Instead of using water to run turbines, Freon could be
used. Freon expands more rapidly at lower tempters than water. and could
be used over and over simply by cooling the gases it is done with
refrigeration...
If it works, the next generation of Nukes, should be built this way, If
you have a ''melt down'', fine, continue producing electricity, no one
has said Chernobal violated the Nucular test ban treaty,, Ha ha

This was seriously proposed in the 50's. The idea was to set off nukes
underground then "mine" the heat with a heat exchange liquid to drive
turbines on the surface more or less as you proposed. It was not clearly
appreciated that the extreme radioactivity in the chamber would make safe,
simple transfer of heat next to impossible. They had a lot of ideas for
using nuclear bombs. One was to use atomic bombs to blast out harbors and
other water works. Again, the danger from radioactivity was not appreciated
in those days. |

Do a search on project Plowshare. The list below was the stated objectives
of the Plowshare concept for the peaceful uses of nuclear explosions. There
is tons of stuff on the web about this. The folowing URL is the source of
the list: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A685109
Plowshare Objectives
The project's goal was to demonstrate that nuclear explosions could be used
for:
a.. Digging canals
b.. Cutting mountain passes for roads and railways
c.. Cracking rock in order to aid the production of natural gas
d.. Building dams by collapsing canyon walls into valleys
e.. Generating electric power by pumping water through an underground
cavity storing the heat of an explosion
f.. Refilling underground water layers (aquifers) by routing surface water
through impermeable layers of soil
g.. Breaking ore deposits to make mining easier
h.. Creating huge underground cavities for the storage of natural gas or
drinking water. |

I guess you mean 'serious' as in believers then. There is no supporting
physics.

Which what the above was about. |
