i am looking to buy a 0.01uF Mylar capacitor but i can only find a
0.01uF polyester capacitor. are the polyester ones the same as the
mylar one?

It's the same stuff. Mylar is just DuPont's trade name for it.

Yes. "Mylar" is just a trademark for polyester.
