Hello,
I am a bit desperate here for information on a condition I am
suffering. I am 26 yrs old and have high myopia (Contact prescription
is -16.5 in each eye). Over the past two years I have been
experiencing retinal bleeding in my right eye. The problem is the
bleeding is occuring in the center portion of my retina. When the
blood drains away it usually leaves a scar which distorts my vision.
I have visited the "premier" retina specialist in NYC and he
basically told me there is nothing that can be done. I really hope
this is not the case as I am starting to experience the bleeding
again. I asked the doctor if this could be the result of weight
lifting that I do at the gym but he says that is not likely. I smoke
occasionally (4-5 cigarettes a week) but I have decided to stop
completely just in case that has anything to do with it. Do you guys
have any suggestions on what I can do? Or a doctor who specializes in
this condition? Thanks in advance. |

In your case, there can be two possible causes:(1) an extremely stretched
retina is tearing apart, and (2) you have neovascularization due to myopic
degeneration. In the former case, there's nothing that can be done. However,
in the latter case, several treatments are available. Where did you go in
NYC? The retina-macular consultants on Park Ave is considered one of the
best retina groups in the world (Drs. Freund & Yanuzzi are second to none).
Good luck! |

You should specifically ask your ophthalmologist or rs if any of the
anti-angiogenic drugs, Lucentis, Avastin, might help.
Good luck also.

I went to Dr.Yanuzzi. I believe my case is definitely #1. Can you
give me a basic idea of what can be done? I want to have an
intelligent conversation the next time I goto the eye doctor. Thanks! |

You probably misread my post. Since bleeding is not caused by
neovascularization, unfortunately, nothing can be done (I'm sure you had
various tests). Bleeding is caused by structural damage to the retina. Some
people claim that lutein, fish oil and vitamin E can help build a healthier
retina, though. |
