Per ANSI Z136.1-2000, an eyesafe, Class 1 laser emitting above 1.4 microns
cannot emit more than 7.9 mJ. Your laser would not be considered eyesafe
emitting 10 mJ.

Russ,
Thank you, you are absolutley right on this point. According to the
user manual "A Class I "eye-safe" 1.54um Q-switched laser must produce
<= 7.9mJ/pulse. If the output of the MR-253 is raised above 10mJ/pulse,
the intra-cavity power densities
will exceed the recommended limits.
I will make this clearer on the listing.

Please take note there are NO SUCH THING AS EYE SAFE LASER!!!
even a 1mw laser can mess you up if you stare into the beam long enough. And
if you think lasers are eyesafe then those 125mw laser "pointer" arent for
you...

Of course, eyesafe is a term that the Government coined, not one from
physicists. The rationalization for eyesafe laser is that the wavelength is
longer than 1.4 microns and hence is not transmitted through the lens to the
retina. These wavelengths are absorbed/reflected at the cornea/lens.
There is some research that states long-term exposure to longer wave light
may increase the likelihood of cataracts.

Yeah, and a 1000 W CO2 laser isn't exactly eyesafe since it will remove
the eyeball entirely.

yea, but seriously though if you were selling "eye safe" lasers some kid
might buy it thinking you can shine it into people's eyes only to find out
it did some damage. Threes a reason all laser should be treated like its
going to mess your eyes or body parts bad, regardless of power or
wavelength.
