It's getting close to my bedtime (it always is :>), so I'll just add
the fact that both Stephane Fischler's paper and Richard de Beer et
al's (U. Pretoria, South Africa) math.DS/0509375 v1 16 Sep 2005
"Noncommutative recurrence over locally compact Hausdorff groups" use
the pigeon hole principle or Dirichlet's box principle (see Wolfram's
mathworld.wolfram.com for this.

By the way, Fischler's field is number theory, de Beer et al's is
dynamical systems, and they both have 509 in their Front For the
Mathematics arXiv numberings and were within 1 week of each other. Ah,
it's coming back to me. 05 is 2005, 09 is September. Still, it's
interesting in relation to numbers if nothing else. But then there's
Rocco de Villiers Duvenhage's PhD thesis of U. Pretoria, which is
related (he's a coauthor of the de Beer et al paper) which is under
quantum physics quant.ph/0312051 v1 5 Dec 2003, "The general structure
and ergodic properties of quantum and classical mechanics: a unified
C*-algebraic approach," so one never knows where things go so to speak.
If the 051 were moved in front of the 03, we'd have 0510312 which
isn't terribly far from 0509275 or 0509508. Do you suppose that these
papers are all in secret code? Let's see, it's 6 months past the Ides
of March, and... :>)
