"Guns, germs and steel", by Diamond was quite a read, he made wide use of
anthropological data. I haven't read his 3rd chimpanzee or whatever.
Doesn't anyone know where I can download these as e-books.
Thanks |

Diamond lost a few points by insisting on Clovis-first in the post-Monte
Verde era (And he insists on the overkill theory despite all the fossil
evidence to the contrary. In fact, he offers the best logical refutation
of the Bering Strait theory, but insists on a different conclusion.), and
the massacre of the Moriori was under British direction. A better argument
than the Bering Strait as a disease barrier, though, would be that
immunity to disease foo has no bearing on immunity to disease bar;
furthermore, diseases are typical of city life or life with domestic
animals: Hunter-gatherers have few diseases. (In fact, Cro-Magnon was
about three inches taller than modern Europeans.)
Also, his ideas about plant domestication in the Americas are obsolete.
Corn, squash, avocados, bell peppers, chiles, cotton, beans, calabash,
peanuts, manioc...
This isn't to say that I disagree with his thesis; his thesis is sound,
but I could argue his case better. Simply put, one can't start working
with iron unless there's some iron conveniently around.
