Since the drives of sex, hunger, aggression are all located in the
limbic system,i was wondering if someone in this group can tell me
which of those 3 is the most basic drive? i mean,a house has a
roof,walls and a foundation,using this analogy,what is the
'foundation' of the brain? i tend to agree totally with Freud that the
sex drive is the basic compenent .Also,is there a way of verifying
this? for example,if you gave a rat neurotoxins to destroy the neural
pathways which control sexual pleasure,if subsequently you tested, say
the rats aggression response (compared to the aggressive response
before the sexual pathway was destroyed),and found any
differece, wouldn't that mean the sexual drive was more basic than the
aggression drive?
I apologise for quite an unusual question, but i have a laypersons
interest in the brain. thanks for reading my post. |

You are using two languages to talk about something. When it comes to
neurology and brain structure, there are no drives. "Drives" is a term
Freud used to ...... I don't know; to obscure?

Take two people, eliminate the sexual response in one and the feeding
response in another and which one is going to die first?

not necessarily. The pathways responsible for "pleasure" may be
different from the pathways responsible for "performance.
In terms of the MALE sexual response and aggression, one common
denominator is testosterone.

Ruby stepped toward him. "Edward," she said softly.
"Learn this from me. Holding anger is a poison. It
eats you from inside. We think that hating is a weapon
that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is
a curved blade. And the harm we do, we do to ourselves.
"Forgive, Edward, Forgive. Do you remember the
lightness you felt when you first arrived in heaven?...
No one is born with anger. And when we die, the soul
is freed of it. But now, here, in order to move on,
you must understand WHY you felt what you did, and WHY
you no longer need to feel it.
"Yo need to forgive your father."
Mitch Albom, "the five people you meet in heaven"

This was actually tested many times in the US and elsewhere.
