For Marcellus, the Roman commander, no record of how the engines he, Archimedes had made. He left books on math works he had done. But on his tomb he wanted the sphere and the cylinder. Saying it was his greatest accomplishment.
What a question to leave with a statement. What is learned and how?
Cicero was in Sicily in 75 BC and he writes how he searched for Archimedes tomb.
and found it enclosed all around and covered with brambles and thickets; for I remembered certain doggerel lines inscribed, as I had heard, upon his tomb, which stated that a sphere along with a cylinder had been put on top of his grave. Accordingly, after taking a good look all around ..., I noticed a small column arising a little above the bushes, on which there was a figure of a sphere and a cylinder... . Slaves were sent in with sickles ... and when a passage to the place was opened we approached the pedestal in front of us; the epigram was traceable with about half of the lines legible, as the latter portion was worn away.
To leave something on stone when anyone would have just wrote praise? Something to last past the at that time present problem.
The logic was used was for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. It will be almost 2000 years and many wars later that that will be written. Not because it should be someone's secret tool but because people kill people.
