In Rotary Laser levels a detector is used to sense the Red laser light.
Does anyone know what type of sensing device is used? Is it a photodiode,
Photocell, etc...

I have seen what one of the professional units uses - one that's used
to control earthmoving equipment grading height. It uses silicon
photodiodes. Some standard silicon photodiodes are used for coarse
position sensing. A specialized version of a silicon photodiode
called a one dimension position sensitive detector is used at the
center of the detector for fine position detection.
