Upstate Could Get Up To 2 Feet Of Snow
Wicked Nor'easter Blankets Parts Of East Coast

POSTED: 2:19 PM EST December 14, 2003
UPDATED: 2:31 PM EST December 14, 2003

ALBANY, N.Y. -- A week after a wicked Nor'easter blanketed parts of the East
Coast, another major snowstorm was predicted for upstate New York that could
drop up to 2 feet of snow and make for a messy morning commute Monday.

A strong low pressure system is expected to develop along the Atlantic coast
Sunday and intensify as it barrels its way up north, bringing 1 to 2 feet of
snow by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Total accumulation of 18 to 24 inches is predicted for the eastern part of
the state and 10 to 16 inches for the western part.

A winter storm warning will be in effect for Sunday and Monday. The storm
should move out of the state by midday Monday.

Steady to moderate snowfall will be replaced by heavier bands Sunday night,
with possibly up to 3 to 4 inches of snow falling per hour in some areas.

State transportation workers were placed on call in preparation for the
storm. Snow crews at Albany International Airport are set to work 12-hour
shifts again to clear sidewalks, runways, planes and parking lots.

The storm is expected to bring in warmer air and the snow may change over to
sleet overnight that could diminish the overall snowfall amounts, the
weather service said.

School districts across the state are mulling whether to cancel classes
Monday depending on how much snow pounds the area.

For Swain Ski and Snowboard Center in Swain, the snowstorm could not have
come at a more opportune time as the resort prepares to begin night skiing
Monday.

"Bring it on," Kathy Gessner, Swain's director of marketing, told the Elmira
Star-Gazette in Sunday's editions.

Motorists were urged to drive with care since snow-covered roads will be
extremely slick.

Stick around. The average in upstate New York I believe is about 10 feet
per year. Lake effect snow, mostly.
