They could do a great deal more by just plain GETTING OUT OF THE WAY.
There are so many hurdles to be jumped by medical research that it cost a
quarter of a _BILLION_ dollars to bring a new drug to the point where the
FDA is even willing to _consider_ it --- and because of the INCREDIBLY
stupid way they interpret the "efficacy" clause in their charter
(a drug must not merely be effective, but be MORE effective than anything
else the have approved), many perfectly good and safe new grugs are rejected,
and all the research money that was ploughed into the is effectively flushed
down the lab-sink drain. This policy does _NO ONE_ any good, since it not
only deprives doctors and the public of treatment choices, but enormously
drives up the cost of the few drugs that _are_ approved, in order to make
up the loss incurred on the perfectly safe and effective drugs that were
_not_ approved. Another side effect of this INCREDIBLY stupid FDA policy
is that it makes it far too expensive to develop drugs unless there will be
a guaranteed "mass market;" hence, there is no incentive to develop treatments
for rare conditions that only afflict a small number of people, since it
will be physically impossible to ever make back the additional development
costs incurred under the government's ham-fisted regulatory environment.
Hence, the government has doomed these people to suffer and die, allegedly
for the "good of the many," but in practice for the good of _NO ONE_ except
the government's bureaucrats. Such people may have no choice but to try to
move to europe to seek treatment --- where they will have to then stay
if they don't want risk being arrested when they come back, because receiving
a non-federally-approved treatment is a _FEDERAL CRIME_, no matter _WHERE_
in the world you receive it. (The U.S. Gov't holds that its citizens must
=ALWAYS= obey its laws --- no matter where in the world they happen to be.)
