There's a Rob Dekker mentioned about a fifth of the way down in this
article. http://tinyurl.com/ya4ve9f
I'm just curious if that Rob is the same as the one here.

The sci.energy Rob Dekker -- generally competent at energy balances --
as been making similar arguments as those on the web page -- probably
the same person.

On a related matter a few years ago another MIT scientist published an
article about the greenhouse effect (with or without human
contributions to CO2).

He claimed that since the Earth radiates energy at a higher
temperature because of the greenhouse effect that the entropy was
somehow lower than it "should" be.

Higher temperatures are certainly associated with lower entropy -- the
unit of entropy is energy/temperature -- so, so far so good.

The interesting part is he then claimed the planet had to increase
entropy somehow to make up some difference -- I've never heard of an
"entropy balance" -- and that this would ordinarily be accomplished
with 24/7 hurricane force winds.

The only reason hurricanes are only an occasional event is because of
the deserts, the Sahara, etc. When dry air from the desert blows over
the ocean and vice versa and the higher entropy greatly reduces the
wind/number of hurricanes.

If he is correct then it seems like there might be some way to derive
mechanical energy -- a lot of energy even at very low efficiency -- by
increasing the entropy ourselves.
