The Medicare Trustees. Dude, this is as close to common knowledge as you
can get. It's been discussed by Congress for at least a decade, with
neither party disputing the facts of the matter, just how to deal with
it (or kick the can down the road.)

This 04 article puts the insolvency date at 2019. That date has been
pulled in significantly because of the financial crisis:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/03/23/politics/main608201.shtml

This article quotes the current insolvency date at 2017, and points out
that changes in the Medicare Advantage funding mechanism (if they pass
in the final health care legislation) will pull the date in even more
(which is where the 2015 estimate comes from. The CBO won't formally
score the new date until after the final legislation passes, but they
have warned that sharing that funding mechanism will draw the date in.

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/nov/01/debate-over-merits-reform-has-distinct-campaign-fl/

For a more detailed (and mind-numbing) analysis on the solvency of both
programs, the paper commissioned by Paul O'Neill (which eventually got
him fired, because he didn't want to shut up about it like Bush wanted
him to) is here:

I am. The effect on medicare solvency is inappreciable. The changes
simply move money from one pocket to the other. The dates remain the
same, for all intents and purposes.

As long as we're funding the military for the entire world, we're using
the money that any other nation would use for health care for other
purposes. That's why Austria and Germany and Japan can afford it and we
can't.

If we were prudent, we'd be talking in terms of high-deductible plans
for both Medicare and the public (immediately solving the problems of
basic preventative care and medical bankruptcy), and then improving
those plans over time IF (big IF) the government ever becomes fiscally
responsible again.

No. That's what Medicaid and Schip are for.

onto a gummint program, and to force the poor
elderly off their Medicare Advantage supplemental
insuranc so they can submit, and line up at the
Soylent Green factory. It's the patriotic thing to
do.

you're full of shit

Just what do you think the cuts in Medicare Advantage
are all about? Giving Granny the best that the SEIU
has to offer?

And clearly, since there is no provision to increase the

Mindlessly silly. Those getting medical services they currently
have to do without will see more delivering those services.

Mindlessly superficial. Increased demand for medical
Now, the other problem is that we already
have programs that take care of the poor.
Very inadequately.
It is not the poor this will affect most. Someone estimated
that of the 47, or 30 (according to Obama's infamous
healthcare speech) million who cain't get no coverage,
only about 5 million make less than 50K a year. Anyone
who makes over 50K a year can get coverage.
Those that dont have coverage have decided they dont
need it and they are mostly correct in that judgement when
they are young and healthy and dont have any kids etc.
Perhaps they'd like a tax break to help out, but they can.
Someone else estimated that millions would soon enough be
forced off their private plans, in spite of marketing to the contrary.
Thats just another lie.
But only the incredibly credulous believe the marketing.
And only fools believe the lies like that one just above.
Not one red cent will be added to the deficit too, uh huh.
No reason why it should be, and even if that does happen,
thats no big deal with the immense deficit already there.
There's a leftard born every minute.
And there's pathological lying rightards born much more often than that.
So, anyway, it isn't about covering the poor, it's about
getting another federal gummint tumor growing.
Only in your pathetic little pig ignorant fantasyland.

No. The CBO has been silent on any sort of change in the insolvency date
in their analyses. It is therefore logical to assume that there is no
change in the insolvency dates.

That aside, a few years in either direction isn't the point; if the bill
did postpone insolvency for a few years, that's simply kicking the can

No. There is no plan to increase the number of

country whatsoever. The number of graduates
produced in the US, you must understand, is
very tightly controlled. This is why medical services
are so much more expensive here, relative to

You are aware that reforming Medicare is part of the larger health
insurance reform plan, right?
I am. The effect on medicare solvency is inappreciable. The changes
simply move money from one pocket to the other. The dates remain
the same, for all intents and purposes.
Because you say so?
Because the CBO says so.

The CBO says Medicare reform can't change their projected insolvency
dates?

No. The CBO has been silent on any sort of change in the insolvency date
in their analyses. It is therefore logical to assume that there is no
change in the insolvency dates.

Peter Orzag says a thing of two on Charlie Rose from NOV-03...the core
of it is that they expect reductions in health care costs for
government by whatever results from the health care reform.
That aside, a few years in either direction isn't the point; if the bill
did postpone insolvency for a few years, that's simply kicking the can
down the road on the matter.

How remarkably prescient of them. I sure didn't read that in anything
you cited, though.

Nor did you read anything to the contrary.

But do go ahead an believe whatever fortune-telling you find comforting.

I prefer to stick to the facts on the ground that exist. YMMV, and does,
evidently.
