Why is my microwave oven a rectabgular prism?...

My microwave oven is very patchy as to where it heats - some parts of an
object clearly heat faster than other parts, and objects near the edge hear
more quickly than objects at the exact centre.

It is my understanding that microwave ovens use coherent radiation. It seems
to me that the rectangular shape of my oven's interior seems almost tailor
made to create standing waves.

Wouldn't they heat more evenly if the opposite faces were not perpendicular,
and so short standing waves were not possible?

Standing waves don't have peaks everywhere. The metal stirrer / rotating
plate is in there for a reason.

Because its' a cavity? Take off the front door - no more standing waves.

And what dictates the standing wave pattern? Hint: wavelength.

Peter oven works by vibrating water molecules Think over that and you
will be smart to answer your own question Bert.
