Hi all,

My first time here! So be gentle with me ...

I'm writing up a report on natural ways to take care of your visual
system.

I came across several facts which I am now trying to confirm AND (if
they are true) get scientific references for.

The first fact I came across: "25% of nutrients go to feed our visual
system."

I've been digging up book after book, calling eye doctors, contacting
various professionals trying to determine if this was indeed true or
not. Thus far, for some reason, I don't seem able to track down
reliable scientific references that confirm this fact--if it is indeed
true, that is. I'm hitting the medical library today hoping to get a
better idea.

There are other facts I'm trying to determine the accuracy of, as
well, AND get references for.

They are:

1. The brain is the most active part of the body.
2. The visual system has brain tissue, and thus is part of the brain
itself.
3. The visual system is the second most active part of the body,
after the brain.
4. 33% of oxygen goes to feed the visual system. (If this is too
high, is there a more accurate percentage?)

Can any of you point me in the right direction in terms of

-- whether these are accurate or not
-- how I can best get reliable scientific references to put down
if they ARE accurate?

That would be tremendously helpful!

Thanks,

Sandy Han

False.

True, and some argue the retinal pigment epithelium, is the hardest working
tissue of all. Additionally, the CNS expresses an incredible array of
proteins.
2. The visual system has brain tissue, and thus is part of the brain
itself.
True, technically the retina is part of the CNS.
3. The visual system is the second most active part of the body,
after the brain.

See above, RPE is probably busier than most neurons. Relative though, just
what do we mean by "busy"? ATP expended, proteins produced, ... ?
4. 33% of oxygen goes to feed the visual system. (If this is too
high, is there a more accurate percentage?)
False, too much oxygen can destroy the retina and the retina is a very small
piece of tissue.
