What are your impressions of which stat packages are most used in
which academic departments? (I'm not concerned with which should be
most used, just which are.) My impressions are:
Econ: Stata
Other social sciences: SPSS
Biostat & Epi: SAS
Nursing: SPSS
Psych & Educ: SPSS
Business: Maybe SAS?
Engineering: ??
Physical sciences: ?? Maybe R or S?? |

An epidemiologist I know tells me that here in Ontario (Canada), a lot
of the more senior epidemiologists were taught SPSS when they were
trained several years ago, and still use it. But some of the more
recent grads (including him) are Stata users. Apparently Stata has
some nice routines for common biostatistical & epidemiological
analyses.

I agree with SPSS for psychology--but I know some folks who use
Statistica too.

Maybe Matlab for engineering & physical sciences?

Pretty much all econ departments have Stata. They pretty much all have
EViews. Most also have Matlab and/or Gauss. |

Engineering: Definitely Matlab.
Hope this helps.
