Schrodinger Equation in hyperspace...

We use Schrodinger Equation in spherical coordinates (3d) to study the
quantum configuration of atoms. My question is, 3d is the correct
dimension to study the quantum configuration of an atom? Any one have
reference on using Schrodinger equation in higher dimension?
