Where is all this spam coming from?
Can hardly find the posts.
Or is it just my news server, no one seams do mind?
Is there anything that can be done about it?
Like fines for anyone who ever buys anything from a spammer?

Might want to try getting your non-binary related news feed from the
following free access news server:
news.eternal-september.org
I've seen quite a few posts in this newsgroup complaing about the spam
but hardly ever see any myself because the above news server is
filtering it out. |

Is anyone aware of any false exclusions from the eternal-sept version or
other providers with filtering?
I looked at Google, so-called groups, the other day and it is stuffed to the
gunwales with it, not surpring as most comes via their entry point. What is
Google's game ? more advertising revenue stream ?
ships overloaded to the gunwales tend to capsize

Oh, I think they care very much. IMHO what they care about is the amount of
newsgroups, the number of postings, the number of signed up users, and the
fact they can claim that they do not censor "Google Groups" in any way.
All of which sounds good on paper, but it encourages exactly the behaviour
we don't want.
Many people filter out Google postings 100%, what would be really nice to have
would be a news reader that could filter out most of the crap, if not all
from Google Groups and leave the rest.
I used to filter out Google 100% with my newsreader (slrn), but found that
I was seeing too many replies to postings from Google that I would have
liked to have read. So I turned that filter off and suffer. :-)
Geoff.

Thanks for that. I should have known, my provider has just outsourced to giganews.

You can set perfectly adequate filters in most newsreaders, including the
much maligned OE, as has been discussed endlessly on this group, every few
weeks, for the last year ...
Just do a search on "spam" on this group, and you will come up with more
fixes for the problem, than you can wave a stick at.

If you decide to subscribe to their service, take note of the special
steps taken when first downloading the newsgroups.rc and the
username/password sequence; details, IIRC, are available on their website. |

Thanks for the links. I use Thunderbird and will look into this.
The strange thing is that never before I saw the need for any spam filter.
I do filter out certain unpleasant posters, which is only partly useful as I
still see the posts that reply to the OP.
I've been on usenet for close to 20 years end have never come across spam of
this scale. It's fair to assume that something has changed. |

Something has, indeed. It's called Google (Google Groups). They've
really fucked things up around here.

Yes it was. Let's not forget who fucked it all up. It was those
"geniuses" over there in Mountain View.

effort?
I tried message filters now and they work flaky to say the least.
I also use different computers quite often, how many times should I create
filters, let alone keep them up-to-date?
Would be so much more efficient to filter on the provider side.
