Nuke the Moon: 5 Certifiably Insane Cold War Projects...

"The upcoming movie The Men Who Stare at Goats
tells the story of a military operation that attempted
to create Jedi warriors who could teleport through
walls and kill goats by staring at them. It all sounds
pretty far-fetched ... until you realize that it's based
on a true story, and it's just one of many bizarre
operations Cold War-era militaries pursued seriously."

Glad to see Project Horizon made the cut. That's one of my favorites,
partly because:

1) when Kennedy gave his famous speeches about going to the moon, the
US had already been working on this stuff for years, and

2) Project Horizon basically got started because the ballistic missile
guys went to ARPA and said "okay, we've built a really frickin' HUGE
rocket... got any ideas what we can do with it?"

Outside-the-box thinking, to the level of "box? what box?"

Think about that for a second: Neil Armstrong is considered a valid
replacement for a nuclear missile.

Piece of advice for the newsgroup readers... as soon as you can get that
Swine/H1N1 flue vaccine, get it,

We are waiting...and waiting...and waiting. The date when our local health
department said the vaccine would be generally available has come and gone.

I think I got swine flu, had a fever for a few hours, but I usually do
anyway
cuz I catch it from girls, which makes me hot anyway.

The Soviets had a similar project, and it got a little further along
than the American one...the idea was to detonate the bomb on the
unilluminated section of the Moon while it was visible in the sky from
America.
They gave the concept up after someone pointed out that if the rocket
malfunctioned, the atomic bomb might come down somewhere on Earth rather
than hit the Moon, and then there would be hell to pay politically.

Piece of advice for the newsgroup readers... as soon as you can get that
Swine/H1N1 flue vaccine, get it, as there are few thing more unpleasant
than spending a whole day projectile vomiting, like I did a few days back.
I couldn't eat anything for three days straight.
Compared to some, I apparently had it lucky - others in our town ended
up vomiting up blood.

You wouldn't even think you could shoot vomit four feet.
You can indeed shoot vomit four feet.
You can shoot it into the toilet, you can shoot it _on_ the toilet, you
can shoot it onto the floor between the toilet and tube, you can shoot
it onto the floor between the toilet and sink, and you can even shoot it
straight into the air and have it fall back on you in bed.
I guess after all the media hype about the terrible desiese of the year
that was going to wreak havoc on arrival, the actual thing was bound to
show up and do so sooner or later.
And just like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf", no one paid attention when it
did, having been mislead so many times before.

A bright flash that could be seen from Earth to warn the Americans:
"See that? That could be your home town."
Due to the lack of an atmosphere, a nuclear blast on the Moon would be
nowhere near as impressive as one on Earth, so the Soviets decided to go
a different route to scare people:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_Bomba

I began making oinking sounds right after catching it, and Jews and
Muslims avoided me. Wink
Seriously, the number of flu cases went right through the roof in North
Dakota in the past couple of weeks, and the doctors say they think that
around 90% of them are H1N1.
I've had seasonal flu many, many, a time, and it was never anywhere near
this severe
I was concerned that this was going to be very bad if I got it, due to
the fact that when the Swine flu came around decades ago, I neither got
it nor was vaccinated against it - those who did catch it back then or
got the vaccine apparently have a lot easier time of it now than those
too young to have experienced it on the first go-around.
