The National Academies Press has two new books on research ethics and
integrity, both of which are available for free reading online.
Integrity in Scientific Research attempts to define and describe those
elements that encourage individuals involved with scientific research
to act with integrity. Recognizing the inconsistency of human
behavior, it stresses the important role that research institutions
play in providing an integrity-rich environment, citing the need for
institutions to provide staff with training and education, policies
and procedures, and tools and support systems.
Responsible Research: A Systems Approach to Protecting Research
Participants outlines an approach to ensuring the protection of every
research participant. Issues addressed in the book include the need
for in-depth, complimentary reviews of science, ethics, and conflict
of interest reviews; desired qualifications for investigators and
reviewers; the process of informed consent; federal and institutional
oversight; and the role of accreditation.
All National Academies Press books are available for free reading at
http://www.nap.edu. Integrity in Scientific Research can be viewed
online at http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10430.html, and Responsible
Research at http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10508.html. |
