Yeah, Sue. First SOME people were dead set against the idea, then flip-
flopped. I still have a really bad taste in my mouth about that. I'll
never understand why "they" (AAMT among others) weren't fighting this
to start. I'll never forget the local chapter convention I attended
where a few of us got some ribbons to wear for USA. Amazed me there
was so little support for US from THEM. Then there are those wannabes
who THINK they are movers and shakers.

I'm out of it finally, I think. My "wonderful" client just wasn't
willing to give me the basic respect of telling me when he was going
to be away so I could plan my time accordingly and I set some limits
he would not accept. It was not unexpected and (perhaps to my
surprise) a relief. I'm now looking to start a small business related
to horses. If not, I've started cooking (who knew I'd be reading a
cookbook in front of the TV) and being a "kept woman." It was good
while it lasted, but I got to point where I didn't have to kiss ass
because I needed the work that badly!

It doesn't mean I don't resent the hell out of the traitors who sold
us all down the river, though.

Rae,

I bought into the lie that we are independent contractors and, as such, we
could set our own rates. When I tested that theory and notified the MTSO I
worked for that I was raising my rates, I was immediately brought back to
reality. The MTSO notified me that I could raise my rates, but I would
receive very little to no work. So much for being independent - we work for
them!!

After having surgery and trying to go back to work too soon, I made some
major mistakes, probably from being under the influence of pain medications.
I have long felt that if transcribing got to be no longer fun, I would quit,
or retire in this case. After basically being put on probation, it was time
to retire. Retirement has been great! I make a little less money selling
Dictaphone equipment on eBay, but the hourly rate is great and the lack of
stress is worth more than money.

Good luck to you in your new venture!!

Amen, Neal. The stress of him pushing back and testing, all the while
giving lip service to how much he appreciated me, got to be more than
I was willing to deal with. He WAS paying me ridiculous rates without
complaint, but he passed that on to his clients. I was doing work for
a friend of his as well. Erratic work, which was fine, but he'd tell
me work was coming on X day and it did not. Last occasion, I emailed
him regarding that stating I didn't require notice of work coming, but
that if he said he was sending it I should expect to receive it.
Emails me back that I'd have first part of report (lengthy psych eval)
by early afternoon. At 6:30, still no file. Email again, and he sent
entire 240 minutes (in several files) all at once. His rationale: He
did not know how to send from him home PC and had to drive to his
office, so he thought it would be easier (for him of course). When I
notified him I was ready to work again after some time off, during
which the other guy declined to continue using my services, I didn't
even get the courtesy of a response to the email in any form - Again,
despite his raving over the quality of my work (required a lot of
rewriting - he put together some pretty circuitous sentences and
constantly mismatched case). I wouldn't be surprised, however, if he
pops up out of the blue and just sends something without notice. He
may be in for a rude surprise in that case.

I've found the same thing with MTSO clients who will fire you for, in
one case, for insisting I be paid for work she forgot to include in
that paycheck (if it were my error I would have expected to wait),
though she did hire me back. ANGRY, IN-YOUR-FACE IM "YOU WORK FOR ME."
Other MTs were getting away with just not doing their work over and
over and, I guess because they made excuses and didn't try to set any
limits, they kept working. It just amazed me to no end. Apparently, my
attempts to communicate clearly are misheard as "bitch." LOL.

Of course, there are a lot of folks I did work for over years who were
appreciative and paid well. It was a good run and I never would have
been able to do it without my internet network.

I'm so glad for you, Rae! I'm still hunting for hidden talents that will
help me find my way out of this profession. I love transcription, but it's
going the way of the dinosaurs in a hurry. I hope your business goes

Me:

Tell me about it. Years ago a major client had a rather sudden drop-off
in the number of workers' comp reports, then a just-as-sudden increase
about a month later. Turns out that in an attempt to save some money -
and I was already charging him less than the going rate for our area -
he decided to send these major reports overseas and see what happened.
The other doc in the office, who did the lion's share of the WC stuff,
got fed up with the delays and poor quality of finished reports and
started sending me the reports again.

Best of luck with the new endeavor. I'm also just about out of the
transcription business. My one huge client dumped me about a year and a
half ago, with absolutely no warning, and no new clients were emerging.
Fortunately for me, this happened at the end of the school year so I had
a few months that I didn't have to pay private school tuitions, and the
loss of income wasn't too bad. Once school started up again, though, we
did some tax rate tweaking and tightened our belts a bit so we could
meet all of our expenses on my husband's income alone. This has given
me the opportunity to go back to school for a certification in pharmacy
technology. I'm already certified and licensed as a pharmacy
technician, and I hope to land a job in a hospital after I do my
externship rotations starting next month.

I had a good ride with transcription. I loved what I was doing. I was
only working part-time at the most, but that was enough for us. I'm
going to keep the one client I still have because he's always treated me
very fairly over the years, and I don't want to leave him in the lurch.

I'm not going as far as to say I'll never do it again - I've seen
that's unlikely historically - but it will have to be a sweet deal on
my terms or with someone with/for whom I've worked in past and it went
well.

Long as I'm not "kept" from doing too much, it'll be good. LOL

OK, being out of this now (save for SPECIAL circumstances)...

What, Jay? Hit and run? I sure could have seen this coming, but then I
was dedicated to my field. I LOVED it. No Johnny (Jay) come lately who
started up the MT Guild to fight off shoring, then sold out? Where'd
you go big guy? I'd nothing to lose before you hit the MT scene and
now that I'm out of it, I still have nothing to lose from wanna be big

where'd you go? More webinars and pretending like you have a freakin'
clue? I'm not the only one here who has more MT in one pinkie than
you'll ever have. LOL.

Thank you, Rae. And taking money for membership (albeit only a buck)
to send you a pin and membership. Gee, you get no pin and don't get
your buck back. Those add up if you "steal" enough dollars from enough
people. Let alone the problems with selling systems to MTs that go
belly up on them and not refunding their money or leave them hanging.
Another honest Christian at work, huh, Rae! :)
