Here is a site that tends to put things into their proper context.

http://science.nasa.gov/realtime/JTrack/3D/JTrack3D.html

I personally never realized that there were so many 'birds' in orbit.
Can anyone image the energy that was required to put them all there?

Note that when you point to a particular satellite and click on the
mouse, it identified the bird and depicts its orbit.I think that's
pretty good.

Just to add a little,

That big ring that you see is the geosynchronous parking orbit for
thing like TV. They maintain a constant sky position with respect to
the earth's surface, which is why it is so crowded.

Close the surface of the earth are little dots that look like a swarm
of insects. Click on some of these for fun, because these guys
include all of the GPS birds, and they have very interesting orbits,
plus the birds providing satellite phone service (Iridium for one),
plus other functions.

Have fun with this one, because you can play with it for hours and
hours.
