Thanks for the advice.
Can you give me an idea of how much this mode of treatment would cost
(extract and partial)?

But later wouldn't 2 implants run around $6k? That's the part that
concerns me...

Can't you go back to the original dentist and complain that his work
has let you down and then negociate a low fee from him to repair his
handywork?

An extraction will not work. I forgot to mention that #3 and #5 are 2
ends of a bridge, so if we were to extract them, she'd now have THREE
teeth in a row missing.

Consider the option of having the problem teeth removed now, get a plastic
partial made, and start saving money for implants. No matter what you do or
say, implants will cost you roughly $4K per tooth. No shortcuts exist.
Long bridges frequently fail in the long term.

That doesn't really make a very good point, since 2 of the dentists -[/quote:d9fb246d3f]
actually those who did the worst work and the most damage - were
practicing right here in the U.S.A., one of them at least American
born, the other from Europe.

My wife had to get gum surgery as the result of a bad root canal here,
and the bridge done here screwed up her other teeth, fit very poorly,
and had to be redone in Mexico. The one done there isn't a lot better
but it is better.

Some of the work my wife got in Mexico was just fine; granted others
were horrible.

To be honest, I would say that the PERCENTAGE of bad work in Mexico
has been higher - if you count my wife's previous work done there as a
child and young adult, probably 60% bad vs. 40% good. But I'm only
batting about 40% bad vs. 60% good, here in the U.S.

Go figure.

While you are probably right, as I stated in my first post we are not[/quote:1403d92215]
doing well economically and am not sure when we will be, so it's hard
telling how long it would take us to be able to afford $12k worth of
implants. Do most people have that kind of money to throw around??

If it were just ONE tooth we needed I might consider it...

Let me ask you, Since it's a #3-#5 three-teeth gap we'd be talking
about, is it possible they could fill that with 2 extra wide implants
instead of 3 regular ones?

Also, let's say we go the implant route. If we had the teeth pulled
now and waited, say a year or a year and a half to get the crowns on
them, would that abe okay? Or do the crowns have to come within just
months of the implants?

Also, what about the chance of having to have bone graft or any other
more expensive procedure in addition to "just the implants"?

Suddenly the $4k a tooth could go up quite a bit, right?

One more question re implants:
Let's say we pull the 2 teeth and have a 3 tooth gap in her mouth
3,4,5.

Let's say teeth #2 and #6 drift inward before we get the implants. Can
they still fit the implants in that space? What would they do, shave
off #2 and #6 to make the implants fit right?

Could we get just one implant, say, in a year, and then another one a
year after that? And the 3rd - if necessary - a year after that?

Or your flat screen TV, years supply of cigs, years supply of beer,
cell phone service, computer, internet, etc.

Had a lady in yesterday for whom I had done a root canal/post/crown on
tooth #7 in 1981. She (well her parents then <G>) probably spent
about $400 for the work.

It's still there and functioning fine 28 years later. Over those years
she has become a reformed 'sodaholic' and retains most of her teeth.

She is now in her 40's and quite happy with the value of her dental care.

But I also had a doofus with an abcessed lower incisor who just wanted
antibiotics until he could 'upgrade' his dental insurance to get
coverage for endo! He thought that would *save* him money.

I am amazed by the number of people who tell me they cannot spend $680 on a
tooth at their age (over 72). But, they drive a new car. The car sits on
their drive way all day long and only gets used for perhaps 2-3 hours in an
entire week. But, $680 is too much to spend for something they would use
for 24/7.

Perception of worth.

Teeth have little value in these people's minds.

20 phalanges vs 28 meaningful teeth. Cut off a toe or finger
at any scratch or pain?
