I think you'll find that what this group needs is some posts.

I'm studying to be a translator, but having seen technical (legal)
translation jobs advertised at 4.5 eurocents per word, I'm considering
prostitution instead.

I'd think this is exactly the point of the original post (aka "irony")

Just as I was thinking the lack of posts was part of a bigger one with
my ISP ! I've never seen it so quiet,

PS. Have you got a photo? :-)

I'd think this is exactly the point of the original post (aka "irony")

Maybe, but another possibility is that Toni (posting from googlemail and
using googlegroups) is seeing vastly more spam messages than people who
use real newsreaders.
[/quote:36f323543f]

yes, you might be right in fact. I use a newsreader (well, many would argue
that OE isn't), but I too get to see those "special" posts, my provider
doesn't seem to bother filtering them. I don't either, the group is dead
anyway. Well, twitching.

marek

Why is that? There's tons of traffic at proz, but the thought that
someone else has the right to edit my scribblings makes me feel uneasy.

I don't know what's happened to usenet. Even cheerslove seems to have
lost its, well, whatever it used to have.

perhaps setting up a newsreader has become a challenge too far? Or people
have finally surrended to the idea of browser-based interaction?
....
incidentally, do you translate things like "Registered Charity No..." in
leaflets, etc? I thought you don't, just as you'd leave untranslated "Since
1856" under a brand name, but now I was told otherwise.

Wouldn't that depend on which country the charity was registered in? If
it's in the UK/US it's not going to mean anything in another country.
Unless we're talking about translations for foreigners in UK/US?

It's a UK charity and the text is for EFL users in the UK too, but I'm not
convinced it's such a clear-cut rule, i.e. if it's for foreigners in the
UK - translate, otherwise - don't. I see this note more like a part of a
trademark, or similar, e.g. "Crown copyright" or "Established in..." Yes,
they mean something, but just like the printers' comments at the bottom of a
leaflet, which provide information the number of copies printed and other
mysterious serial numbers and abbreviations - are you supposed to translate
them? Particularly if the client ignores your question on the subject? I
suppose it's easier to be on the safe side and translate, at least they
won't imply that you _forgot_ to translate something :)

Come to think of it, while prostitution is referred to euphemistically
in French as "le plus vieux métier du monde" (I don't know whether one
says that too in other languages too), I reckon translation must also
be a pretty old activity.

Here's an interesting article on moderated newsgroups. It's not as

I'm not very familiar with proz. Why would they edit other people's
posts?
