I watched a Mars Phoenix segment of scienceNOW last week. At one point, they
were showing something of an analysis of soil here on earth with something
like a vial of some ingredients that would test soil for the % of various
chemicals like calcium, nitorgen and potassium. The vial had color markers
on the side, and looked smaller than a common test tube. Where does one get
these devices? Typically when pays $60-$80 to have soil tested. You supply
about a pint or two of soil, and send it off for analysis. 10 days later you
get the results.

Correction. One not when.

Your local garden centre will supply kits to do this. They are only as
good as the operator using them, but are almost foolproof if you follow
the instructions.

That is a much more comprehensive analysis. Usually done to check for
heavy metal pollution or other problems.

I contacted Phoenix. It was a common garden sampler.

Well yeah. They actually went to the store and picked it up in the
episode!
