Résumé / Abstract
The safety and efficacy of total dose infusion (TDI) of iron dextran
has been well documented. In 40% of treated patients, an arthralgia-
myalgia syndrome develops. The purpose of this randomized, double-
blind, prospective study was to investigate whether intravenous (IV)
administration of methylprednisolone (MP) prevents this complication.
Sixty-five patients, 34 women and 31 men, ages 36 to 80 years,
received either normal saline before and after TDI (group 1), 125 mg
IV MP before and saline after TDI (group 2), or 125 mg IV MP before
and after TDI (group 3). Patients were observed for 72 hours and
reactions were recorded and graded according to severity. Fifty-eight
percent of group 1 patients, 33% of group 2, and 26% of group 3 had
reactions to TDI. The severity of reactions (minimal, mild, and
moderate, respectively) was as follows: group 1-6, 6, and 2; group
2-1, 5, and 0; group 3-5, 1, and 0. Data were analyzed by the two-
sided Fisher's exact test using 95% confidence intervals with the
approximation of Woolf. These data demonstrate that administration of
MP before and after TDI reduces the frequency and severity of the
arthralgia-myalgia syndrome. We conclude that 125 mg IV MP should be
given routinely before and after TDI of iron dextran.

Well frankly, Mister President, it's the **my** part.

By the way, last week I was chatting with a fibromyalgia patient about
her condition and her iron levels. Something she was well aware of
since
she had just been verified as being iron depleted, with negative
results
for hemosiderin in bone marrow fragments. The doctor was encouraging
her to consume more meat-based protein, because her non-heme iron
intake was only about half as bioavailable. We chatted about your
notion of high iron being the reason for her pains. She rolled her
eyes
and asked me to tell you that you are an idiot and don't know what
you
are talking about.

So, from Janice to Tom-"You are an idiot".
And from me to you- "You are a plagiarizing twit".

Think that just about covers it. Now, back to 'your' thread.

Michael,

Methinks I was the one that might have planted the seed of "my

A few months ago, when I started to post after a three year absence, I
replied to one of Major Tom's threads.  It was then I stated something
regarding "his thread", due to him writing it etc.  Apparently, it
encouraged him to tell folks to get off his thread, due to him not
liking the poster or the posting of the poster.

Unless of course, you've seen him try and throw folks off "his

Where do folks go when they get "thrown off threads"?  Is there a
special hades or purgatory for folks "thrown off threads"?

Abstract The role of free radicals in fibromyalgia is controversial.
In this study, 85 female patients with primary fibromyalgia and 80
age-, height-, and weight-matched healthy women were evaluated for
oxidant/antioxidant balance. Malondialdehyde is a toxic metabolite of
lipid peroxidation used as a marker of free radical damage. Superoxide
dismutase is an intracellular antioxidant enzyme and shows antioxidant
capacity. Pain was assessed by visual analog scale. Tender points were
assessed by palpation. Age, smoking, body mass index (BMI), and
duration of disease were also recorded. Malondialdehyde levels were
significantly higher and superoxide dismutase levels significantly
lower in fibromyalgic patients than controls. Age, BMI, smoking, and
duration of disease did not affect these parameters. We found no
correlation between pain and number of tender points. In conclusion,
oxidant/antioxidant balances were changed in fibromyalgia. Increased
free radical levels may be responsible for the development of
fibromyalgia. These findings may support the hypothesis of
fibromyalgia as an oxidative disorder.

The purpose of the study was to determine the oxidative and
antioxidative status of plasma in patients with fibromyalgia.
Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of plasma was significantly lower in
patients with fibromyalgia (n = 20) than in healthy controls (n = 20)
[1.5 (SD 0.3) and 1.9 (SD 0.3) mmol Trolox equiv./l, P = 0.001].
In contrast, the total peroxide level of plasma was significantly
higher in patients than in healthy controls [37.4 (SD 6.7) and 33.0
(SD 2.7) micromol H2O2/l; P = 0.01].
The oxidative stress index (OSI) level was significantly higher in
patients with fibromyalgia than in healthy controls [2.5 (SD 1.0) and
1.8 (SD 0.4); P = 0.007].
A significant negative correlation between visual analogue scale (VAS)
and TAC level was determined (r = -0.79, P < 0.001).
The present results indicate that patients with fibromyalgia are
exposed to oxidative stress and this increased oxidative stress may
play a role in the etiopathogenesis of the disease.
Supplementation of antioxidant vitamins such as vitamins C and E to
the therapy may be indicated.

Résumé / Abstract
The safety and efficacy of total dose infusion (TDI) of iron dextran
has been well documented. In 40% of treated patients, an arthralgia-
myalgia syndrome develops. The purpose of this randomized, double-
blind, prospective study was to investigate whether intravenous (IV)

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common chronic pain syndrome with an unknown
etiology. Recent years added new information to our understanding of
FM pathophysiology. Researches on genetics, biogenic amines,
neurotransmitters, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hormones,
oxidative stress, and mechanisms of pain modulation, central
sensitization, and autonomic functions in FM revealed various
abnormalities indicating that multiple factors and mechanisms are
involved in the pathogenesis of FM. Oxidative stress and nitric oxide
may play an important role in FM pathophysiology, however it is still
not clear whether oxidative stress abnormalities documented in FM are
the cause or the effect. This should encourage further researches
evaluating the potential role of oxidative stress and nitric oxide in
the pathophysiology of FM and the efficacy of antioxidant treatments
(omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, vitamins and others) in double blind and
placebo controlled trials. These future researches will enhance our
understanding of the complex pathophysiology of this disorder.

Abstract  The role of free radicals in fibromyalgia is controversial.
In this study, 85 female patients with primary fibromyalgia and 80
age-, height-, and weight-matched healthy women were evaluated for
oxidant/antioxidant balance. Malondialdehyde is a toxic metabolite of
lipid peroxidation used as a marker of free radical damage. Superoxide
dismutase is an intracellular antioxidant enzyme and shows antioxidant
capacity. Pain was assessed by visual analog scale. Tender points were
assessed by palpation. Age, smoking, body mass index (BMI), and
duration of disease were also recorded. Malondialdehyde levels were
significantly higher and superoxide dismutase levels significantly
lower in fibromyalgic patients than controls. Age, BMI, smoking, and
duration of disease did not affect these parameters. We found no
correlation between pain and number of tender points. In conclusion,
oxidant/antioxidant balances were changed in fibromyalgia. Increased
free radical levels may be responsible for the development of
fibromyalgia. These findings may support the hypothesis of
fibromyalgia as an oxidative disorder.

Do me a favor? There are designated acupressure points for
headaches at the base of the skull. Next time you get a headache,
tension or migraine, could you have a couple of tennis balls in a
sock,
tied off so they'll be snug, and lay on it so the tennis balls are at
the
base of your skull, on both sides.

It helps some, you might be one of them.

For the straight tension headache, I suggest a couple of socks, clean
and without mates, with almost 3 inches of rice in the toes. Tied off
tightly, then both in another sock, like the tennis ball setup. And
use them
in much the same way, but you can heat them up in the microwave
to provide both pressure and warmth to the area. If it works for you,
thank Tom, because after all, it IS his thread. ;-Þ

Carbohydrate treats myalgia.
You will be hard pressed to find a carbohydrate food which does NOT
contain phytic acid / phytate.
White floured products don't.
It has been removed with the chaff / brown of the grain.

Phytic acid is shown to be an anti-inflammatory.

That is the free bisphosphonate .. again.

It chelates iron .. like aspirin and ibuprophen.

One-year follow-up in a child with McArdle disease: exercise is
medicine.
Feb 2008
Margarita Pérez,Carl Foster,Marta González-Freire,Joaquín
Arenas,Alejandro Lucia
A 9-year-old boy with McArdle disease, who demonstrated remarkable
recovery of objectively measured exercise tolerance after 1 year of
follow-up, during which he pursued age-appropriate physical
activities.
The patient presented 1 year previously with severe myalgia , muscle
weakness, proteinuria, hematuria, hyperthermia, and elevated creatine
kinase levels after noncompetitive swimming.
At that time, he reported a 3-year history of general myalgia and poor
exercise tolerance.
He was diagnosed with McArdle disease by both biochemical and genetic
methods.
Subsequently he performed a maximal exercise test and was prescribed a
return to age-appropriate physical activity (protected by a pre-
exercise dietary consumption of approximately 20 g carbohydrate).
At 1-year follow up, he reported no subsequent acute clinical
episodes, no general problems with exercise either at school or in
ordinary activities, a virtual normalization of serum creatine kinase
levels, and a 14% increase in body mass-adjusted peak oxygen uptake
(from 18.8 to 21.8 mL O2/kg/min).
The results suggest that, with protection by increasing pre-exercise
blood glucose with carbohydrate ingestion, a substantially normal
lifestyle may be possible in some children with McArdle disease.

more time, YOU DO NOT OWN A THREAD!

I start a thread there is going to be .. NO .. abuse of the poster ..

Period ..

YOU don't .. like that .. rule .. ?

Who cares whether or not you like my .. rules.

Those are the rules .. understand .. ?

Is that too hard for ya .. ?

Either be contributive / supportive .. or stay off the thread .. and
then if someone does become roadkill ON **my** thread .. then you
won't be privy to it .. will ya .. or INVOLVED in it .. directly or as
I said .. ENGAGED .. IN . . . . it . .

Stay away from .. **me** .. or abide by my rules which coincidentally
are the same rules used by every ISP in the world.

"No personal abuse"

Understand .. ?
Comprendez .. ?

Do ya .. ?

Who loves ya.
