I rather doubt that's much of an issue for anyone with a good score. If
you were borderline it might matter. I remember about 12 years ago when
we were putting in our pool, they thought we had too much open credit
(cards), even though the amount we owed wasn't excessive. They wanted us
to destroy some of the cards. I think the bank lady basically offered to
say she took them but give them back. LOL. To me that was just a useless
step. So, get rid of a bunch of them and cancel accounts. You could turn
right around the day after you got the loan and send in the ones that
keep coming in the mail.

Everyone, you might want to monitor your credit score when getting
those store credit cards.

I've heard experts say these can cause that number to go lower. As you
know, that number is tied into interest rates and the ability to get
loans. Just a thought!

I dunno, Kathy - re cancelling and lowering your score. Thing is, if you
are up there a little bit lower isn't going to have much impact on your
ability to get a loan if you need it. Last time we checked, DH and I
both had scores of the high 790's. I know you can get higher, but what
they base that on I don't know. It is more than a function of paying all
bills on time or anyone who always paid on time would have the top
possible score. Maybe some of it is based on total indebtedness versus
value of assets or something. I don't worry about it enough to have it
influence whether I'm going to apply for a new card or cancel one, but
then we don't have any high card balances, own two houses free and clear
(except for a small equity loan against one), and a couple of auto
loans, one of which will be paid in less than one year.

I've heard that someone running a credit check on you an affect it as
well, i.e., if you were looking into buying a car and they ran your
report to see if you were eligible, even if you didn't end up buying at
that dealership.

Oops, that amount was either fat fingers or wishful thinking. Of
course I meant to type $4.41, not $3.41.

Judity

$4.08 for 91 octane, $3.88 for 87 octane at Costco today.

Thanks, Neal. I don't think we have Costco here yet - and if so it's far
enough the drive to fill up would probably negate any savings. DH is
trying to drive his motorcycle to work when he can, and we're getting
better than 31 MPG with our new Ford Fusion. Around here it is going to
be the cost of heating oil the just kills some folks. There was an
article in yesterday's paper about a local family that is having a hard
time. It's going to be horrible for those who do not have well insulated
homes. I'm sure cost of fire wood will go up as well, though that
doesn't affect us living on 13 acres of woods we will not run out of a
source of heat.

Rae,

Do you still have the big truck? Is that what DH is avoiding driving by
taking the motorcycle?

Here it is the air conditioning that runs up the bill. If we didn't have
any heat we might get cold some in winter, but we wouldn't freeze to death
and I could use some of those clothes I brought with me 20 years ago!
We've tried to set the A/C higher than normal, but with the electronics in
my office I have to have it cool enough there. If it is too hot my fingers
stick to the keys and I make errors and can't type efficiently, but we've
wondered if it would pay to buy a small unit for my office as there are
certainly days we could do without A/C elsewhere. My bill for May was
almost $550, and I know June, July, and August are going to go well over
$600.

Barb C.

OMG, Barb, $550! We skipped spring and went straight into summer here,
expected to break 100 for the first time in the next two days. Our May
bill was ~$180, but we have a reasonably new house with good insulation
and radiant barrier in the roof. I wish we could have gotten a better
AC, but the best we could get at the time was 2 SER units below what is
currently considered Energy Star rated. One think that isn't done here,
and I don't understand why, is offering AC with an ECU, which uses
waste heat from the AC to pre-heat the water before it goes into the
hot water heater. This also allows the use of a smaller AC compressor.
We had that when we lived in Florida, and it was great.

Barb, would it be cheaper to get a simple fan to have on next to your
work area instead? I remember a CSI episode where someone put together
what is called a swamp cooler. That's a pan of ice in front of the fan
creating an even cooler breeze. These sound much less expensive than
an A/C unit.

That's just a thought from one who dislikes air conditioning. My home
doesn't have A/C, although Blue Satyr came with one. I admit I have
used it but always with the window open to get fresh air into my
lungs.

Judity

Judity,

Unless you have your auto AC on the "recirculate", "max", or whatever
Toyota calls the setting, you are automatically getting fresh air
pulled into the AC, cooled, sent to the car interior, and then vented
outside. There's no need to drive with the window down and the AC on to
get fresh air. That's the worst of both worlds as far as fuel economy
is concerned.

I'm not worried about fuel economy. I just prefer fresh air from
outside going into my lungs, not A/C air, which I don't consider at
all "fresh." I have it on now and then to cool the car, not for
breathing.

Personal choice!

While this is the highest bill I have ever gotten for this time of year, we
do have a large swimming pool, which of course is expensive to run, and we
farm--both growing some of our own produce, and nursery products and orchids
for sale, and pumping that water during dry season costs. We are just
getting into the rainy season which will help with water use. We also have
a small guest house, which right now my son and his wife are living in, but
before that we either rented it, and before that my mother lived there, so
that has been being used for many years.

What I do not understand is FP&L is applying for a 16% rate increase--you
say of course, fuel prices. But....they already have a "fuel charge" which
was over $250 of that $550 bill, so why should they get an increase on top
of that. It varies every month now, and more than half of our electricity
in this area comes from nuclear power!

Now if I had the $50,000 to go solar that would help, but I don't.

We have fresh air all winter, but rainy season would have damp and mold
everywhere if we did not use a/c. I, too, prefer fresh rather than air
conditioned.
