The lamb recipe thread kind of piqued my curiosity about what things you
guys would not eat when you were a kid that you enjoy eating now.
The ones I mentioned were olives, raisins and any kind of seafood.

Brussels sprouts and salmon.
Things I didn't want to eat when I was younger and still don't want to
eat now: cooked green peppers, asparagus, shrimp, crawfish, lobster, crab.

I honestly can't think of any food that I hated as a kid and like now. The
only food I hated as a kid was cooked oatmeal, and I still can't stand it.
The policy in my parents home was "This is what's for dinner. You will eat
what has been prepared or you will be hungry." Fortunately my mother was an
excellent cook. There were some things I didn't care for (acorn squash) but
I wasn't forced to eat them. Today I like acorn squash, but only when it's
covered in butter and brown sugar. Thus, I don't eat it.
I pretty much raised my kids the same way. They ate what I made, but we
never battled over it. I would never force a child to eat something they
hated. My sister-in-law ruined every meal I ever had with her. She would
force feed my nephew food that he was literally gagging on. She would yell
at him, "Don't you dare throw that up" and sooner or later he would stop the
"erking" gagging, and up it would come. Just the tension at the table, and
my sympathy for my nephew, made me lose my appetite. I mean honestly, what's
the point? To this day Scott is a finicky eater and he's in his 30s. egad,
I'm getting anxious just remembering it now.

I used to make a great kidney pie with mashed potatoes instead of a crust.
I'm going to have to look for my recipe! (Oh yeah, I bet that's really
going to make my DD and grandson happy...)

Funny thing, I'm allergic to sweet potatoes -- in fact when I had a test in
the 70s it was one of the fastest reactions the doc had seen and a huge one
too. I could never stand the smell and would never taste them (good thing I
guess). If I touch them my hands itch. Same with the greens on radishes. I
love radishes and can eat them but the greens make my hands break out in a
horrible rash. I have to where gloves to clean them.

There really weren't many foods I didn't like as a child, and I've stayed
pretty consistent with that. Pumpkin pie and sweet potatoes are really
the only things I can think of offhand, and I've gotten so I can tolerate
pumpkin pie as I've gotten older. Every year at Thanksgiving I try a
little bit of both, just to see if my tastes have changed. Sweet potatoes
really seem like something I should like, but I just can't stomach them.
I'll keep trying, though! <G> Oh yeah, Dr. Pepper. Truly nasty stuff,
IMO.

I hated brussel sprouts until we planted some one year and I tasted the
ones from our garden. They taste nothing like those bitter things you buy
in the store, and we make it a point to plant some annually.
As for the rest I have never been a big veggie fan. I try. I do eat
nice fresh salads now. But, I hated carrots as a child, and I still
hate carrots, and if you put them in stews or soups it spoils the whole
dish for me because all I can taste is the carrots! I buy carrots every
week for the horses, though and always go out and give them each a carrot
before I go to bed. Funny thing is I do like parsnips, which some
people say taste like carrots--not to me, they do not. Never had then as
a child, so don't know if I would have liked them then.

My sister's MIL did that to her husband only she hit him with a wooden spoon
to make him eat. For years he ate only to survive and hated eating at all.
There were only a few foods he would eat. He hated the dinner table and
meals in general. She was German and would just yell at him and hit him each
time he refused to eat a bite and try to force him (by hitting him) to eat.
It is amazing what parents do to kids and how it affects them.

I happen to like liver and onions once in a while, but I don't like making

well. I ask them to add some bacon too.

I think one reason so many people don't like liver is that most people
don't know how to cook it! Most people over-cook it so much that it
looks (and I imagine tastes) like bad shoe leather. It should be
cooked until the pink is gone and not one second longer. Beef liver
lightly coated in flour is usually cooked thoroughly when cooked about
three minutes per side.
Hmmmm...chicken livers are even better! <GG>

Do you like butternut squash? To me, that tastes slightly like sweet
potatoes, but not as strong. It's really wonderful with some butter

When I made my mom mad, she always made scalloped potatoes. I HATED them
and she would make them and put A HUGE spoonful on my plate - took up
nearly half the plate. I would have to gag them down and I still cannot
even look at them without gagging.
I do make my son try something but I don't make him eat it if he doesn't
like it. He eats just about everything, though, except casserole-type
things and spaghetti sauce. He asks for salads, mushrooms, fruits,
veggie tray, cherry tomatoes for snacks, carrots for snacks, etc. Buy
him a fruit tray and a veggie tray and he thinks he's hit the jackpot!!
My DH gets upset with me if I don't make our son eat what we eat. He had
to when he was young but I tell him the difference is that there were
four children in his family and they couldn't all have something
different. His mother wasn't a short-order cook - LOL. If I make
something that I know my son doesn't particularly like, I will make sure
to have a big salad with it, some fruits and a side that he does like. |
