What have they to say, though, about the economy? I haven't caught any
sound bites of importance about that. The cost of oil dropped today
to $123 a barrel, but will that help at the pump? It could be worse, I
guess, since I heard in England they are having to pay around $9 a
gallon.
There is nothing any President can truly do to fix the economy. The
best decisions for long-term stability will wreak total havoc in the
short term, and it is political suicide.
Remember when Sam Armacost took over B of A when Tom Clausen fled in
shame to avoid being publically considered responsible for the shambles
he left the Bank in? Sam made tough decisions, turned the bank around,
brought it into the latter half of the 20th century, and right before
the fruits of his labors were about to bloom abundantly, the Board of
Directors unceremoniously dumped him and re-installed Clausen so Clausen
could claim the victory. (And I hope they cancelled the special $80,000
a year extra pension they gave him when he left for the World Bank when
he came back, but I wasn't there by that time, so I have no idea.) |

What I think is hysterical is how many hetero couples are functionally
doing away with marriage but the gays want to marry.
Personally, I would rather see the concept of civil marriage done away
with altogether and have everything be civil unions, with those people
who want a religious ceremony having one separately, rather than start
the floodgates open to marriage being defined as whatever anybody thinks
it is.

OTOH, if you abolished all health insurance in this country -- or, as I
read somewhere either in an article or on a newsgroup that had a
multinational discussion of health care, prohibited health insurance
companies from making a profit -- you would do far more toward health
care reform than putting the government in charge of it.
ALternatively, there are a lot of high-cost, high-tech things done in
health care that I do not want for myself, and if one had the option to
get low-tech health care at a lower cost, that might work.
Quote: From what I've read, there is rampant fraud in the Medicare program,
which is leeching out much-needed money for the rest of us. Since
there is so much unemployment now, why not train some of these more
responsible people to ferret out the doctors and hospitals that are
the worse offenders? That would solve two problems.
Have you ever read, "Free to Choose," by Milton and Rose Friedman(sp?)?
It's an excellent book with a lot of common-sense solutions that are
excellent but will never be done because it would be political suicide
for any politician who endorses, recommends, supports, promotes, etc. them.
Quote: I don't know what can be done about the Washington politicians to get
them to fix some of our country's problems. We can vote the worse
offenders out, of course, but so many Americans don't even bother to
vote. So, the thieving band merrily plays on!
Seriously, there is nothing they can do in 8 years to make a permanent
difference. The best I believe we can hope for it that the pendulum
swings back and forth enough that it never ends up at the extreme of
either side. |

Living in California, I've always been irritated at the national news
stations stating a winner in Presidential elections when only the east
coast and middle American states are through voting. I vote early in
the morning, but this type of reporting can cause people, who can only
vote after work, to not bother.
In these last few months, I've actually seen the winner named in
states when only one percent of the votes are in. Will they be doing
that to West Coast voters this November?

Unfotunately, taking that attitude guarantees that the Demolicans and
Repulicats will continue their stranglehold on government.
Here in Texas, the Republican Governor, Perry, won re-election with
only ~42% of the vote. This means that almost 60% of the voters wanted
someone other than Perry for Governor. There were four major candidates
for Governor; the Republican, the Democrat, and two independents, one
of whom was Kinky Freedman and the other who was the former Comptroller
of the State. The Democratic candidate didn't come close to the
Repulican's vote total. This reflects a major disagreement with the
Republicrats and Demolicans. As a result, Perry's changing his stance
on some issues.
I would like elections to require a person to get the majority of the
votes to win, not just the most.

That's exactly how almost all of my votes for President have been cast.
Only once that I can remember did I vote FOR a candidate rather than AGAINST
one. Hopefully, this election will make that two votes for a candidate!
