I feel it's a sad commentary on people when they bring a person's
religion into whether or not they'd make a good President. I think
back to the controversy of John Kennedy being a Catholic and if the
Pope would interfere in the running of our country. Any of you
remember that? How about more recently with Romney being a Mormon and
if that would influence him?
It is indeed sad, but the reality is, religion (especially when talking
about president wannabes) will always be a big factor in this largely
Christian country. If Obama were a muslim, and even if he has great
potential, I'd probably not vote for him. Yeah, I'd be part of the sad
commentary.
Quote:
I'm not sure that Senator Obama's lack of foreign policy background is
bad since there are always people around the President to inform and
guide. Senator McCain may have a background in this area, but do you
agree with everything he has done or says he will do?
I do not agree with everything he has done or said he will do. We know
that most politicians will say anything to get elected. At least with
McCain, he has a long political record which can be scrutinized and
should indicate where he wants to take this nation. Obama is pretty much
a blank slate because he hardly has any congressional record to talk
about.
Quote:
My more immediate concern, the same as most people living on a fixed
income, is how our new President would handle the economy.
If the economy is your immediate concern, then Clinton should have been
your gal. Bill and Hillary presided over the *best* economy in modern
times, called the "goldilocks" economy which was not too hot and not to
cold, but just perfect. The budget was balanced, *no* budget deficits.
The dollar was strong, business was booming, home equity way up, and we
were enjoying the best of times all around. In spite of Bill and
Hillary's shortcomings, the fact remains we had it real good back then.
Quote:
I love our country and think we deserve better than the choices we are
being offered this year. Oh wait! Ron Paul is still on the ticket,
isn't he?
He is similar to Ross Perot in the sense that he is not electable.
Nevertheless, he is a good man.

The problem I have is his political record. From what I've read, where he
wants to take the country is NOT where I would like to see it go. Plus, he
flips one way before flopping the other, whichever way the political wind
blows. There are a lot of good things about McCain, no question about it,
but I'm just not convinced he would be a good leader for our country.

Most of them are floppers.... because they are politicians. I can live
with floppers as long as they favor the nation's interests. While there
is hardly anything to scrutinize Obama's congressional voting record,
his Illinois senate record is open season. Correct me if I'm wrong, but
isn't it true that he did not vote on more than 100 state senate bills
which indicates either political savvy or indecisiveness (whichever you
want to look at it). I'm certain that the GOP will exploit the latter,
plus other skeletons in his closet including his business association
with that sleazy Rusco (??) guy. True or untrue, the GOP political
machinery will go negative on him big time.

No question, the GOP will sock him on anything they can find, as I'm sure
the Dems will McCain, whether or not the politicians themselves stay focused
on issues. Sigh... Wouldn't it be terrific if just once we could have an
election that didn't involve mudslinging and word twisting?

Who was the father of Obama's father? Was he a Muslim? If one is born a
Muslim if he or she is born to a Muslim father, then was Obama's father born
to a Muslim father? If so, Obama's father could not "give up" his Muslim
faith, just not practice it, and it would make no difference in how the
Muslim extremists see him. If Barack's paternal grandfather was not a
Muslim, then, perhaps, the extremists would find him less of an apostate
(but I doubt it).

Well, it's actually false. Obama's father was not a Muslim (he had
left the religion) before he married, Obama's mother did not convert,
and since his father gave up all claims to him, under Islam's own
rules, it means that Obama was *never* a Muslim.
It's just another example of the intellectually shoddy reasoning used
by some commentators. |

I really think this is reaching. Come on, Phyllis, you know you weren't
planning to vote for a Democrat in any case! ;-)

We were just discussing that if one is born to a Muslim father, the Muslims
consider the child to be a Muslim. I didn't know whether his paternal
grandfather had been a Muslim so I asked the question. I have since read
that he was and so was Obama's stepfather. While it doesn't make a
difference to me, it very well could to Muslim extremists.
Whether I vote for a Democrate or a Republican, a Libertarian or
Independent, I still live in this country and what happens to it is
important to me.
