Air Force Updating GPS Interface Docs for L5, L1C
May 6, 2008
GPS World
The U.S. Air Force's Interface Control Working Group (ICWG) has recently released
publicly-available draft versions of updated GPS Interface Control Documents. The documents
specifically address the use of forthcoming new civilian signals.
Interface Control Documents (ICD) are the formal means of establishing, defining, and
controlling interfaces and for documenting detailed interface design definition for the GPS
program, according to the Air Force. For each of the interface types, an ICD typically
exists between configuration items to establish and specify interface definition and design.
The three documents currently being updated by the ICWG involve navigation user interfaces
and the interfaces specifically for the forthcoming new signals: the safety of life or L5
signal, and the new civilian signal, L1C. The L5 signals will make their debut with the
Block IIF series of satellites, the first of which is scheduled for launch next year. The
L1C signal will debut in the future Block III GPS satellites.
All of the current ICDs as well as the updated drafts of the ICDs undergoing revision and
their related internal comment documents can be found on the Los Angeles Air Force Base
website. Following are specific links to the draft documents, in PDF format:
