Well, we all know the dollar today can only buy what a penny bought
before WWI. The value of the dollar fell by 99% in the last century
or so. OTOH, there isn't enough gold in the universe to back the
amount of business that goes on today. You see, from Roman times until
maybe the 18th century, the population of the planet remained pretty
static, as did business. The world only reached a billion people
around 1800. Today it's going on 7 billion. Most of that growth has
been in the last century. But more important, since mass manufacturing
came into existence, and people no longer grew their own food, or made
their own clothes, etc., and had to buy almost everything, people
needed money. Something they didn't really need or have down on the
farm. But there wasn't enough gold or silver ("money") to go
around,even with all the gold rushes put together. And so scrip paper
backed by the "good faith" of the gov't (taxes) had to replace lucre
as common medium of exchange. And the supply of that money had to be
controlled by a more impartial agency than the gov't itself. That's
why central banks came into existence. A little over a century ago,
any factory could print its own paper scrip and give it to its
workers, which they would have to spend in company stores.
Eventually, it became clear that the gov't had to monopolize the
issuing of money, and not every Tom, Dick and Harry with a factory.
But someone had to control the gov't from going wild with that power.
And that is why the Central Bank, or "Federal Reserve" bank was
created, and naturally bankers were used to sit on the board of the
Reserve. Of course, anyone near a register or a cookie jar can
sometimes find a way to manipulate things, but there was no choice.

It was also to reduce bank failures and losses to depositors, which
was all too common in the 19th century. Now people are people, and
cunning people will always find new ways to "game" the system, no
matter what that system is.
So what exactly was this Paul Warburg "banking scam?" Never heard of
it.

You have got to be kidding me .. Paul Warburg owned the Federal Reserve
Central bank in Berlin and was one of the planners of the Federal
reserve system at Jekyll Island in 1913.

I do know is that prior to WWI, the US was a debtor nation indebted to
European banks and countries the same way the US is indebted to China
and Japan today. But thank to the Europeans destroying themselves
during WWI and WWII, the US, unscathed, emerged as the wealthy banker
to the world.. But no more. Thanks to dogmatic Republican policies,
they've run the country's finances into the ground. While I have been
pro-Republican on social issues, they have proven disastrous when it
comes to finances. Anyhow, these crazy conspiracy theories about the
Federal Reserve Bank, and all of these wacky, 19th century laissez
faire ideas promoted by Ron Paul are nuts. Anyone who wants to go back
to the 19th century is welcome to do so.The way things are going,
it'll become like Gaza soon in America and we'll have to go back to
riding donkeys too. I'm sure Ron Paul will be happy to get back to
horse and buggy days.
