There is so little astronomy being posted to this group that I am
starting to wonder if there is any point continuing to post here.

Is there any evidence to prove that the bulk of the trash is not posted
by you or your agents?

Things are improving but for the recent past and the near future
access to Newsgroups has been only available to me via Google.

If you have normal access to the Internet at all, you should be able to
properly access newsgroups without any expense. I use the server at
aioe.org; it's free, requires no signup, and carries essentially all
non-binary groups.

Long live the Sky at Night forum! That's even where the founder of

At what point do the amateur astronomers give up?

When they take away your telescope and give it to a few
people who already have 20 of them and then change the
lock on the door!

Thats when.

Although the number of hits per day on my web site continues to climb
the percentage of hits that come via Google groups has declined quite
steeply in recent weeks. Perhaps amateur astronomers are moving away
from the unmoderated mess that Google groups has become?

This is my opinion: While I appreciate your effort to bring astronomy
to ssa, the repeated posting of links to web pages with your images,
one well-known object after another, may indeed seem a bit pointless
in the long run. Problem is, you inject too little personal experience
into these pages and the result is rather bland and does little to
arouse interest in the reader. For whom are these "Ten Minute
Challenges" intended? Do you have any personal experience you want to
discuss? Also, skip the Hall of Shame stuff.

As others have pointed out, Google groups is not the only, nor best,
way to access USENET, and your statistics may be misleading.

You said it best when you wrote: "Perhaps amateur astronomers are

I spent a few minutes reading the vulgarity and undisciplined verbage
and concluded that I did not want to participate in an environment
like that.

but, Googol has brought usenets to the starving natives of
upper, inner, lower, and sideways Golmavia-Fox and the
Who-Two Tribe! Without Googol the world would be so much, less. Imagine
the loss of advertising to the starving
homeless under our bridge here in Iowa City!
