I was wondering how effective using the ultrasonic cleaner would be for
root planing? Is this ever done?

I have a friend who has had problems with the tmj and I was thinking
that ultrasonic would eliminate the problem of so much pressure on the jaw.

Ultrasonic scalers are effective. I like to begin root planing with an
ultrasonic and then finish with hand scalers. I think you need hand scalers
for the tactile sensation you get while using them. You can really tell how
smooth the root is getting this way.

If your friend has joint pain after a dental appointment, he/she has muscle
spasms which are made worse by holding the mouth open for an extended period
of time.

Holding the mouth open contributes to it, as does the up and down
pressure on the jaw caused by the hand scalers. There isn't a problem
when the upper jaw is done - only with the lower, movable jaw.
