Whatever Fred Randall was on.
"It's me, Fred. They've taken over the ship! 50, 60 of them! I've had
to hide in the jungle. Take this down: I need four barrels of
gunpowder, a machete, a goat skin, a guide that speaks Hutu."
"Fred, snap out of it. Fred, snap out of it. Fred, snap out of it."
*SLAP!*
"Wasn't me!"
Ether would be too hazardous. |

I don't see 'recreational drugs' in space, where one may
need to become totally reality-based on zero notice. I
do think there will be a place for work and study; for
some meditations; for *exercise* which brings up good
endorphins as well as counteracting harmful effects of
zero g.
*Eighteen months*? ?? I think that's an error; however,
such travel times are in sight for going out past the
Belt or for some sort of science Grand Tour expedition.
The question calls for the Zubrin Method: Do analog expeditions
as locally as possible to develop the technology; then apply
it to incrementally extended expeditions as experience
complements basic knowhow. I.e., *research* and as that
has not been done we don't know what will turn up when we do
it. Thus I think 'recreational drugs' is doubly wrong now.

I thought it was more like 6 or 7 months. And their worst enemy is far
from boredom, it's radiation bombardment in open space.

I be a lot more worried about eighteen months of exposure to cosmic
rays. Kentucky fried astronaut. At least considerble genetic damage
anyway. |

Pot would be nice, but smoking in a spaceship probably wouldn't be the
best idea, so an adequate supply of brownies should be provided. And
as anyone who has ever seen the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey can
tell you, outer space and LSD go hand-in-hand. |

See Zubrin, 'The Case For Mars' (twelve years ago). Very good book.
Zubrin suggests re that 'fried astronaut' radiation out there, to
send tobacco addicts to Mars. Without their tobacco, after that
radiation exposure, they will experience a (statistical) net lifespan
*gain*.

Thus if a meteorite holes your ship and you're too dazed with chemicals
to cope with it, then you're 'stoned' indeed.

No worse than on ground here, since cosmic rays -- technically,
the shortest wavelength EM radiation -- aren't stopped by 100 or
so miles of air. Fact is, thousands of cosmic rays have passed
through your body by the time you've read this far. |

I don't know...six months without a cigarette, and I'd probably make
an error operating a system. A blown mid-course manuver, or neglecting
to clean the scrubbers...I don't think a small craft with more than
one of us would survive the trip. <g>

A goodly percentage of them have already scattered off atmospheric
molecules well before hitting the ground. The flux is much lower at
sea level than in outer space plus the Earth itself blocks 50% of
them. Astronauts frequently report seeing flashes of light in their
eyeballs as cosmic rays scatter inside the eyeball fluid. If you don't
think it's a problem you better advise NASA as they think otherwise.
According to them, the difference in exposure is about three orders of
magnitude |
