Good day,
I'm currently a computer science an MSc student in Computer Science
(CS). My studies are coming to an end and I'm considering going onto a
PhD.
Broadly, my CS related interests are in Artificial Intelligence
(Pattern Recognition and Optimization) and Image Processing.
I'm toying with the idea of moving into the energy field by doing a
PhD which will combine CS and energy research. I'm especially
interested in clean energy, but would also nuclear of fossil fuel
based methods.
I saw a talk on CNN with the head of an EU parliamentarian where they
discussed the future of energy in Europe. The conclusion was that
buildings were the biggest culprits, having a larger carbon footprint
than all forms of travel combined. Legislation is currently in place,
requiring all new buildings to generate a percentage (can't remember
exactly how much) of their own power. Furthermore, the energy grid is
being altered in a manner that will allow a surplus of generated
electricity to be pushed back into the grid.
I find these topics fascinating. I realize my description is vague and
one would have to narrow the 'scope' a lot, but I need to start some
place.
If you have any ideas on areas where CS can be used to further energy
research, please share them.
