Mathematics is the king of arts and the queen of all sciences. Isn't?
What is Mathematics actually? Give me a best definition for
Mathematics. Thanks. Preparing for AIEEE? India. www.mathsindia.blogspot.com |

My preferred definition:
The study of propositions of the form A implies B.

"Pure mathematics consists entirely of such asseverations as that, if
such and such a proposition is true of anything, then such and such
another proposition is true of that thing. It is essential not to
discuss whether the first proposition is really true, and not to
mention what the anything is of which it is supposed to be true. If
our hypothesis is about anything and not about some one or more
particular things, then our deductions constitute mathematics. Thus
mathematics may be defined as the subject in which we never know what
we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true." --

Murphy's Addendum #314 to Science Laws explains it pretty good:
"If it's green or it moves, it's biology.
If it stinks, it's chemistry.
If it doesn't work, it's physics.
If it doesn't make sense, it's economics.
If you don't understand, it's math."

| Mathematics is a game with some definite rules to manipulate symbols as if they were chess pieces. The only difference is that while in chess eventually some player wins or both players tie, in maths the development of the game is endless, there's no winner and yet people insists on keeping playing anyway. |

Mathematics is the science of quantity, number and space.
Mathematics is FAR more than that, and one cannot understand
the concepts if one is so limited.
It is not merely a body of calculation procedures, theorems,
and proofs, but there are also the concepts, and the abstract
ones, which will not be included in the ones stated, help
greatly to understand those.
What the non-mathematician needs to be able to do is to
use the concepts to speak mathematics, so the power of
the subject can be used to solve his problems. Knowing
how to calculate special cases does not help here.

So for example we might move "7" diagonally seven squares and so on? I
suggest you acquaint yourself with Frege's classic criticism of the
sort of extremely silly formalism your claim is an example of, which
sort is indeed so silly people nowadays wonder whether anyone Frege
criticised actually ever held such a retarded position.

Mathematics is the new Holy Bible! It's an invention. It was invented
for the same
reason the bible was invented, to explain the universe to others.
In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss,
while a mighty wind swept over the waters.
Then God said, "Let there be a Big BANG!," and there was a big bang. |

there are many best definitions.
With mathematical tools the human mind consolidates existing knowledge
of quantities and inter-relationships to explain away new qualities
and phenomena. During scientific exploration operating at frontiers of
knowledge it can bring into fuller order what exists so as to serve
prediction of the non-existent. |

I don't think that's what my claim suggests, and if you think so then you shouldn't interpret it that literally.

Will do so, though I doubt it will change my mind, at least in my own interpretation.
