In a rotary engine such as a Wankel or a QuasiTurbine, does it matter
if the gas is compressed radialy or axial?

In other words as a vane, piston or rotor rotates and compresses the
gas, it does so as it rotates around the axis but if it was compressed
by an action sideways along the axis of rotation would that affect the
performance of the engine?

Squish was considered helpful when engines were carburetted, I suppose
because it improved the mix. For a fuel injected type the mix is much
better already.
