For those of you unfamiliar with these terms:
Suriphobia- Fear of mice.
Musophobia or Muriphobia- Fear of mice.

Why they have two terms, I dont know.

What I do know is that both I and my wife have the phobia and it seems
to be getting worse, particularly for my wife. She'll wake up in the
middle of the night screaming because she had a nightmare about a
mouse or rat charging at her. Well, that's why I am awake right now.
She just had another nightmare like this.

Of course I understand it this time because last morning she was
putting bread in the toaster and a mouse jumped out. She was pale,
had a very rapid pulse and was gasping for air. I was almost ready to
call an ambulance. I talked to her to calm her, but I often dont
think I am too effective because she knows I am also very afraid of
them.

Other people dont understand us, because we're animal lovers. We have
about 25 pet cats, and rabbits, a dog, a goat, ducks& geese, several
ponys, and a small herd of horses. We are always bringing home
orphaned and unwanted animals. A friend of mine said "I've seen you
walk into the middle of two young stallion horses in a fight, and
shove then apart without giving any thought to the risks, yet you
nearly pass out at the sight of a mouse". Well, he's almost right.
Almost in the sense that I will semi-tolerate a mouse, after I set
traps all over the house. But get me near a rat, either indoors or
outdoors, and I will feel faint.

So, I guess both I and my wife have Suriphobia or Musophobia.

I am posting this to ask how others would work with these phobias? I
think my wife in particular needs some help because of the dreams. I
doubt we'd consider therapy and phychiatrists for this, but really
would like to work on this ourselves.

Any tips?

These are interesting times with serious risks to your welfare that
you'd rather not think about, so you displace the fear.

Fear of mice isn't necessarily a mental disorder, it's just that it is
defined as a mental disorder by psychologists who keep cute little mice
as pets. Psychologists rarely keep snakes as pets because they look
scary, so fear of snakes is defined as perfectly normal.

It is still up to you to decide whether you want pursue psychotherapy
and pay Dr. Phil $500/hour to tie you to a chair while he drops live
mice on you to desensitize you. You might want to shop around for a
better price, perhaps by giving your Mexican lawn boy an extra $5 to
drop the mice on you instead of Dr. Phil.
