Thanks Kirby, for an excellent collection of links.

I have a friend who is a psychologist and likes to study this sort of
stuff. He believes that all the conspiracy theory beliefs are based on
our very early childhood memories when our parents concealed basic
facts from us. These include being taken to the doctor's office to
have a shot, or strange sounds that children hear coming from their
parent's room late at night. As they become adults, some of these
former children are incapable of rationalizing their former beliefs
and therefore see some form of conspiracy behind even obviously
explained events. They employ the events in their childhood to justify
their irrational beliefs, plus extract some form of pleasure in doing
so.

Recent UFO reports from the southwest confirm this theory. What were
obviously 'fire balloons' carried by air currents were mistaken as
'mysterious UFOs' by observers as reported in last week's news. The
obvious explanation for these objects is mundane, but the believe that
they are evidence of some alien force being present excites the
imagination. Same thing with 9/11. The obvious explanation is that the
collapse of the twin towers of the WTC was caused by the two planes
seen crashing into them is insufficient for some people, so they
prefer to create some form of highly implausable conspiracy at
work....Which according to my friend is based on a childhood
experience such as being taken to the doctor while being told that
they were simply going for a ride. This teaches them that a secret
conspiracy lurks behind even the most simple events.
